At a first look, this expired domain looks good, no toxic backlinks, no spam, good DA and all.
But here are a couple of things I found weird:
1. I did a site:domain.com search on Google and just found 1 weird page indexed (off topic and in Japanese language)
2. Semrush report shows that the rankings spiked once and severely dropped, perhaps a manual penalty?

Ya, I did that. Looks like a normal site.
Nothing weird or fishy.

So should I ignore that ranking history?

I can't tell you that, I would need to see and do my own research on the domain to be sure.

Btw, I'm not asking... [just sayin']

This can be related to anything, I mean on the sudden drop.

As I can see all happened in just 14 days which might be red flag #1.

Day 1 - 0
Day 2 - 100
Day 3 - 50
Day 4 - 20
Day 5 - 10 and so on...

There are "indications that something bad" was done during that period but again on the other hand it doesn’t have to mean.

In the past, I had domains that, for example, changed two owners where I was the third.

The first owner had his own business and everything was great - 2008 - 2012.
The second owner used the same domain because of the solid statistics for his PBN - 2012 - 2016.

The moment when I decide to take such domains is mostly after a good confirmation from me that I can clean and fix that domain in a couple of months.
I never had that problem buying something and later have a problem because of the past of that same domain.
I can say that I worked on really really bad statistical domains.
It either work or not because of what and how I do it...

Anyway... If you like the domain, go for it and simply test a few things to see how it behaves.

Thanks a lot for sharing.

One thing, the stats I shared wasn't daily, it was yearly.

So it's like in Jan 2017 the site had a great time, then next year things went half and on the next year, it started to decline really bad.
So i think there must have been some kind of penalty.

LOL My bad... Sorry.

That explains one part, anyway, I would still go for it but that's just me... You know the best ;)

If the same website was live during all these years (can be checked by archive) then there might be ranking drop or Google penalty. The domain might not have the link juice despite having strong backlinks...

Also are you paying more than $10 for this expired domain?

p.s. everything is speculation until the domain is known

in Japanese language
Check the cache of the page and see if it was used for adult or pharma site. That'll clear everything. Most people just ignore as soon as they see any japanese page in history. If the domain metrics are good, you can try to resurrect it. If the metrics are just average, then it's better to ignore it.

Yes, it was live.

It has expired 2 months ago so I just have to pay the normal rate on GoDaddy.

I am 99% sure that you haven't checked the domain history properly by any means.

Archive will only take you so far. Have you checked Domaintools screenshots and hosting history? I can almost assure you, that the domain has been abused.
