Best way to stop drinking

Want to stop drinking and I am considering the Alan Carr method.

Has anyone had success with this or another method?
Mix sour lemon to your drink every time you buy. I have read it works for few.

I've been there way too many times.

Stopping smoking and drinking for a year, once you take a sip, you are instantly back to square one.. Some people will stop and others never will but if you keep yourself busy with other things then you'll probably be better (at least for some time) but that's the goal eventually.. start by staying sober for a year first.. If you keep telling yourself that you'll stop drinking forever then that strategy doesn't work.. A year now, then two, then three.

Ask a psychiatrist for psychotropic drugs which will help you dealing with the reality sober.

Start a company.

Stop contacting with drinkers.

Think about consequences like cancer.

Realize alcohol is a brainwashing tool.

Appreciate your life.

Don't waste your life away.

If you don't start therapy, you will find yourself in the same place in 2 or 3 years.

Many of us realize when it's too late.

Once you take the very first sip of alcohol in your life, you rewire your brain.

Now you need to rewire your brain with a therapy.

And you need other people to convince you that this is super bad.

There is a good book called Willpower Doesn't Work by Benjamin Hardy, it's not explicitly about drinking, but it can be applied to that too

Tldr: creating a supportive environment is more sustainable than forcing yourself to resist bad habits.

Imagine that you keep drinking and what you see is your kids and your grandkids coming to look at you in your casket, crying because they can’t speak with you anymore because you committed a slow suicide with alcohol. Your face is shriveled and they will never think of you in the same way.

Think about that when you go to sleep.

I suggest you read these books:
- James Clear: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones
https://www.alcoholtippingpoint.com/post/applying-atomic-habits-to-quit-drinking- Charles Duhigg: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business
https://transcendrecoverycommunity.com/power-change-drinking-habits/
You can do it.
Good luck!
First book won't work.
Second book won't work.
And no book will work.

There are 3 ways to get addicted:
  • psychologically,
  • socially,
  • physically.
Most alcoholics drink due to the fact people around them drink.

So avoid those people at all costs. No matter how good they feel.
They manipulate you.
It costs you health.

Psychological addiction is a little bit different.

It's when you are not satisfied with your sober life enough.
Or you simply drink alcohol instead of water.
This can also happen due to f*ked reward systems.

If you can't deal with going sober forever, get psychiatric help.
There are drugs which make it absolutely disgusting to drink alcohol.
Once you start taking them, you will think alcohol is poison and you can drink one beer a year.

I honestly am teriffied with ways people deal with addictions in this place.

This is a physical substance you put into your body. You can't fix your body by reading books and thinking.

You also can't make people around you less alcoholic people by reading books!

But it shouldn't be a shocker given people in this forum many times are into niches like "self-help" and "magic manifestations".

My recommindation would be not to use willpower (at least not fully),
since it only sounds good in theory but almost never works

but to fufiil the need of drinking with something safer (it can be running, drinking coffee, finding a hobby, cook tasty and healthy food etc...) while using your willpower to tolerate the withdrawl symptoms (which will be gone sooner or later)

Cmon, these people are on the way to destroy their lives.

You can just tell them to get help.

You have to be brutal.

Like alcohol is brutal.

Alcohol is a strong cancerogen.

Combine it with smoky red meat.

Combine it with cigs.

And sometimes combine it with cocaine and amphetamine.

Holy shit.

Alcoholism is many times a symptom of something rather then the problem, if you solve the core problem,
you will solve alcoholism (and its true for many other addictions)

I didn't tell him to combine it with other drugs (expect coffee, since it can also help with energy and its not dangrous), and there is nothing wrong with meat

Not everyone has access to get help and help centers can many times make the condition worse

Genius post. You actually said this is a trap with no way out. :)

No people can help you.
No specialist can help you.
Only cooking tasty food as a replacement can help you.

Seriously? List the real causes and stop talking that replacing something like that can be done.
The only replacement alcoholics can find is acid, marijuana and cocaine.

You just won't be able to deal with it if you have alcoholics around you.
Being alone drinker sucks and most people will quit if they are alone.

So first step is to cut yourself from all other addicts!
The next step is to cut yourself from alcohol. If you can't do it, you take medicaments.
The last step is a therapy.

You can rerank the 2nd and 3rd step if you wish.
It's not about going to some group therapy.

It's about realizing you are killing yourself and doing something you've never expected when you were younger.

Have a rule and stick to it that you will only drink at bars. Never buy alcohol from a shop to drink at home.

Make yourself busy and have appointments in the mornings for things you genuinely want to do that you won't want to arrive hungover to.

Try mushrooms if you are able to get them. One trip and you will stop drinking

Recovering alcoholic/drug addict here. I've been sober for over 2 years and I did it initially through a 12 step program. Left for a while. Realized I was inching back towards a drink/drugs. Now I'm active in a 12 step program again and it works for me!

I think no courses, no methods will help. Shit is willpower. I recommend to take up some time-consuming hobby. I don't drink and I haven't smoked in years. I didn't need any methods, I just decided one day that I didn't drink or smoke.
cap

I used to smoke sigarettes and weed....
I quit both...
The easy answer is , just stop it...
The not so easy answer is, make a commitment to yourself...
Find a healthier replacement... like sports , other hobbies, starting microsoft 2.0, whatever to make you forget the other crap...

The best way to stop is to not hang out with the same friends that drink. Otherwise you will always be tempted to drink. Start hanging out with others who don't drink until your no longer have an urge to drink.

I haven't personally tried the Alan Carr method, but i have a friend of mine who's parents were heavy alcoholics and smokers for over 30 years and after reading the books they both quit and have been sober for several years now.

I know if i every had to give up boozing and smoking, that is where i would start. just from seeing it work before.

Don't hang with people who frequently drinks, they don't let you go, they drag you with them

Most tend to drink when they feel free and doesn't have anything to do, better occupy yourself with some activities

Drink on weekends or on trips
