Changing RAM in a computer issue

Well, maybe. I don't know. How would I know if they are suffering from memory leaks? And if I knew they were, how would I fix it? I don't know.

I'm really a noob over here. I'm just trying to build a house by putting a brick on top of another brick and super-gluing them together. So far so good :D
I'm definitely no expert either! Only thing I can recommend is to check the FireFox memory usage on this URL: about:memory
I'm not a FireFox user so I can't really say how this will look, but there should be a button labelled "verbose" which will give you a very granular and detailed view of how your RAM dedicated to FireFox is being allocated across all your different tabs, extensions etc so you might be able to see if something in particular is taking up an usually high amount of memory. You'll have to use your own discretion as to what "unusually high amount" is for you and the tasks you're performing
You should also see a button labelled "Minimize Memory Usage" or something similar. If you click this I'm pretty sure FireFox will then attempt to release any cached memory that it no longer requires.
Another fix you might be interested in is to reduce the content process limit (if you've enabled hardware acceleration) which you can do in FireFox's performance settings. The hit here is that more processes = better performance at the cost of more memory - but since you're using so much memory it might be useful to sacrifice a bit of that performance.

Why would you run 3 rams and not 4.. You either go Dual channel or Quad channel for the most stability (dual channel most stable). If you don't have same RAM with same CL timings, don't expect XMP to work. You will only be greeted with a blank screen or broken stability (bsod crashing).

Why would you run 3 rams and not 4.. You either go Dual channel or Quad channel for the most stability (dual channel most stable). If you don't have same RAM with same CL timings, don't expect XMP to work. You will only be greeted with a blank screen or broken stability (bsod crashing).

I had 2x16GB ram in a computer, and I needed 16GB more. So do I but 2x8GB sticks, or do I buy 1x16GB stick?

I buy 1x16GB stick because I can then reuse it on a different computer in the future. The 8GB sticks are quite useless to me. I don't have a place to use them, and I hate buying and selling physical crap.

I only have 8GB sticks because they came with 2 computers I bought a few years ago. Then I stopped being a lazy cunt and started putting my computers together myself, and I would never buy an 8GB ram stick :)

Ugh, the processor is the last thing I want to touch. It's like, it's there, and if you remove it you gotta put toothpaste on it, and even putting it in is difficult usually. No the processor is my last favorite thing to mess with.

When I pray, I only pray for the processors in my computers to keep working without needing any interference from me. That's all :D

I did the about:memory on one of my browsers. And it gave me a loooooooooooooooong list of shit I don't understand.

And hardware acceleration, I use an older version of Firefox. I think it has the hardware acceleration thing, but how well it works, who knows.

You know, this shit is a little bit sensitive. So you make a change, and all of a sudden browser are crashing, and you're swimming in shit.

I'm content with the way my shit works, we good.

Now, if God wants to come down from the sky and make it better, well all right, my door is open. But that's it.
 
So the computer's been running for about 8 hours now. The ram is at 67%. The computer is slightly slower than before, but it's working well enough for my needs.

I still need to see how it's running after 15 and 20 hours, but so far so good...
 
So I gathered up the energy to do one more computer. I cleaned it up, which is never pleasant, but ultimately worth it and feels good when done.

This computer has a motherboard with only 2 ram slots, and is running with 1x8GB and 1x16GB ram. The 8GB ram is 2400mhz and the 16GB ram is 3200mhz.

I want to put here the 16GB ram I took out of the other computer. To my luck, both of these 16GB ram chips are CL18. I always buy CL16, but one time I bought CL18. And now they meet, perfection :)

Anyway I put in the 2x16GB ram sticks and the computer turned on fine, but showed 2933mhz speed. So I restarted it and entered BIOS.

Now, in BIOS I have under "AI Overclock Tuner" the options "AUTO", "D.O.C.P" and "D.O.C.P Standard". The auto is auto, but the other 2 options both seem to produce the same result, which is:

D.O.C.P DDR4-3200 18-21-21-39-1.20V

So that looks okay, but I'm not sure what the "18-21-21-39" bit is...

On the other hand, I could just leave the "AI Overclock Tuner" to "AUTO", and set the "Memory Frequency" to "DDR4-3200MHz". In fact, this is what I'll do, because sometimes less is more :p

There's also this other option called "Performance bias". The options are "AUTO", "None", "CB15", "Aida/GeekBench", and "CB11.5". But I have no clue what these are, none whatsoever.

So I'll just change the "Memory Frequency" and run with it. If it doesn't work, or if someone can tell me what the D.O.C.P and the Performance Bias things are, I can change it up.

Let's see what happens...
 
Well all right, the computer turned on fine, no issues.

This PC got a nice bump. It went from 24GB 2400MHz to 32GB 3200MHz.

We'll know if it's all good within 24-48 hours. Hopefully no shut downs, restarts, blue screens of death or any other crap pops up.

I cleaned 3 dirty computers today, and it was a hot day, and I feel disgusting. I'm gonna go take a shower.

There's no warm water, so I'll do a nice cold one, you know, like a real man hahhahaha :D
 
So I've decided to move around some ram in one of my computers.

So first I opened and cleaned the computer. How did I clean it? By blowing and blowing of course. I ain't got no fancy leaf blowers and whatnot :D

So then... the computer has 3x16GB Ram 3200 mhz. So I took out one of them, and put in 2x8GB 2400 mhz. I did it correctly, 1+3 and 2+4.

I plugged it in, and when I pressed to turn it on the fan light came on for a second and then off again. Dang...

So now I'm thinking I must have broken it while cleaning it (forever the pessimist) and I may have to throw it away. But I remove both the 8GB ram sticks, and it turns on fine.

So now I'm in BIOS, looking at "Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P)", and it's set at "Profile 1." This one has the "Memory Frequency(MHz)" set to 3200 MHz. If I set it to "Profile 2" then the frequency drops to 2933 MHz. I can also set it to "Disabled," but then it goes up to 3200 MHz. I assume disabled makes it AUTO, which just picks up on the 2 ram sticks that are plugged in now.

So I'll set it to disabled, then shut the computer down, plug in the 2x8GB sticks again, and turn it on again. Fingers crossed.

first google your model / brand to see what the max amount of ram you can put in - putting too much can either fuck it up or be worthless

also make sure to ground yourself when breaking it open - a static shock could fuck it up as well

and/or if your living dangerously go with 128 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Nah, I don't think I have a CPU that can handle 128GB ram.

Even with 48GB ram, my processors on all my computers hit and stays at 100% workload way way waaay before my ram gets even close to 100%.
 
Oh shit. I wake up and the first computer I did wasn't working. I turn it on and I get this error:

"Your PC needs to be repaired.

Error code 0x0000428
"

I opened BIOS and set it to load defaults and restarted. Now it works.

What the fuck.?
 
So I restarted the computer just now, and again it didn't restart. It threw some kernel error, blue screen of death.

So again I entered BIOS first, set the defaults, saved and exited. Then the computer turned on.

WTF?
 
I am staring at a PC that I "bricked" while trying to change out the ram 5 years ago. I think there is either a bunch of dogecoin or bitcoin on there. I have moved 5 different times in 5 years and I just haul this thing around with me because I am sure it has some things of value even though it is like 12 years old. Can't imagine how slow it is going to feel when I finally get it running again.
 
So when I had it set to run at 3200mhz, and I plugged in RAM that's 2400 MHz, the computer wouldn't even turn on.

Back when I worked with hardware everyone said never mix memory clocks.

It's not just the clock that changes but other stuff too.

Also that's how it's supposed to work. RAM failure turns machine off completely. But the motherboard usually has LEDs which show hints. Like 3 blinks mean something, 2 blinks mean other.

I solved tons of RAM issues by just reading the manuals.
