I was thinking to develop small games and publish them on playstore. I was wondering if anyone here had any success with this.

I have been doing so from long time, they are more profitable then website at some point.

Essentially everything can be profitable if you stand a chance of being competitive.
Wal-Mart is profitable, but launching a competitor brand would be tough.

Small games not going to do much, try some other apps.

Yes without a doubt, I know it's not a small android game but I would look into Kolibri Games and their Idle games.

Founded in a student flat in 2016 as Fluffy Fairy Games by a group of IT and Business students, Kolibri Games is a young games company based in Berlin, Germany. The team developed their first title Idle Miner Tycoon in just eight weeks, following their signature lean approach. Continuously refining their games based on player feedback, they are steadily pursuing their goal to become the most player-centric games company in the world.

But what you really care about

Total Kolibri Games mobile app revenue in May 2021 was $2m, including $800k for iOS apps and $1m for Android apps. Total mobile app downloads for Kolibri Games was 3m, including 600k iOS app downloads and 2m Android app downloads. Kolibri Games has a total of 14 apps, including 7 iOS apps, and 7 Android apps.

Good luck op, I hope this helps.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Yes bro, without any doubt they are still very much profitable, stick with that. Best of luck

My man, you need to understand 2 things: First, you need to have luck. Second, marketing is more important than the game.

I've been doing it for a while now, I have more than 15 games on my portfolio (most of them casual games), and my most downloaded game stood at 500+ downloads.
I haven't made any money so far ( maybe a few cents, but I don't count that)
I think my games are pretty good, I make them from scratch and I put a lot of passion.
I don't have money to market them so my faith stands on organic downloads. I use social media also but I have only my friends following me...

So it's definitely not easy.
I think most people fail before succeeding: Henry Ford, Michael Jordan, Oprah, or freakin Einstein.

Like Walt Disney said: “All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me... You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”

Good luck brother

I think I read somewhere that the mobile game industry is right now the most profitable in the entire industry (video games), much more than computers and consoles. So I think there’s a lot of money to be made, just not as easy as it was in 2010 since there’s a ton of competition. If I was going to develop a mobile app or game I’d choose the AppStore over android though since it’s MANY times more profitable.

Reskin - Grow - Sell
Excuse my ignorance, when you say "Reskin" you mean you get a cracked version and change some textures/models or you really build a clone of some game, using different textures/models?

Well, it really depends. If you talk about "small games" then what do you actually mean? Tetris? Space Invaders? A visual novel? RPGs?

Making a video game is extremely difficult because you have to find the perfect balance between:
- a great story (why should people play the game?)
- great graphics (nobody likes shitty looking games)
- an adventurous feeling (nobody likes boring games)
- flawless gameplay/mechanics

and most importantly: the best possible way to monetize it without being too aggressive in showing ads or pushing the people and this is a dilemma because you don't want people to hate your game and give you shitty reviews, but you also want to earn as much money as possible.

Forget about banner ads. They earn you a few cents and are worthless. Interstitials are okay, but they are more annoying than anything else.

The real money is in adding a reward system or in-game currency, which players have to increase by purchasing, using an offer wall or by rewarded videos.

Or you could just make hypercasual games, but this is a hit and miss and you better have a great marketing strategy

No, I buy source code from developer, I change everything inside game and publish it.
