When I went through the process with my actual schools (two schools, two accounts), neither asked for more than my email address but it was not instantaneous. I didn't get access until about 24 hours later. This was 1 year and 3 years ago. And on a side note, there is a lot more than a free .me domain there. There is a ton of resources for web devs sitting there. My personal favorite is access to full versions all JetBrains IDE software products.
