Is 'Never give up' ever the wrong advice?

Sometimes is better to give up, it's all a matter of circumstances. As a general rule, I agree: "never give up", but sometimes you are just wasting your time, for your own good it's better to give up, put in the effort and fight for something else.

If something is not bringing you income, pleasure, inspiration or happiness, this doesn't belong in your life.

Well I think "Never give up" kinda depends on the situation.

I think "giving up" is a prime example of someone having a go try to and launch a site then when it does not make a million over night they give up - that's where it applies.

Theres a different of accepting a loss like your business is done and it's time to walk away no matter what you are going to do nothing will be enough.

I think it's more a case of stopping early vs seeing something through to the end.

So with my first serious business I set up at the tail end of the .com bubble and I done OK from 0 to millions, I just didn't know how to manage that money I lost a considerable amount of it and I tried recreate that business (I think) 12 times- BUT it ended up going tits up on many occasions and I even ended up getting done for fraud.

All on the basis of "never gave up"

In the end I decided to have a break and I did give up.

It wasn't until I came to setting up the current business on the basis that it will never be for me and then things finally started to click and change. I now have a brand worth 7 figures and I hope is on track to a buyout sometime in the next 5-10 years.

Id not be in this situation at all unless I did give up.

Give up as soon as all of your energy is spent protecting downside. Perseverance is great for individuals, but trying over and over on a bad business idea doesn't help anybody.
Thanks I needed to hear that

Never Give up is not a Wrong Advice at all but it applies only when you know you are going in the Right Direction.

Keeping to continously work on something which will never work is a Waste of Time - Changing,Tweaking and Adapting Things with Never Giving up on your Goal is actually right:)

Thanks folks.
I think a prime example was when I did an affiliate site - loved writing the content, hated everything else - and everything else was hard for me. Could of outsourced but couldn't really afford it. Yeah I guess totally depends on the person/circumstances.

Thanks for all the input folks.

Tough when it's from an artistic perspective as well:

There's some vids I would/do love to do on YouTube. Now I don't want to lie - the idea of money is part of the motivation too, but because it's artistic it could fall flat on the money side (not for everyone) which admittedly would leave me deflated.
The 'Follow your passion' idea, but if that passion yields little/no money and you want to make money from it to escape the soul crushing 9-5 to survive it's hard.
Anyhow - am I rambling? Probably.
I really appreciate your comments though.
I sometimes think statements/ideas/quotes etc get drilled into us without fully revealing the whole picture.

Cheers

I didn't make money for 4-5 years, was I sad? No. I fricking love it. I don't mind doing this for free, the only reason I'm focusing on making money from it, is so I can quit my day job which does make me sad. Once I can quit my day job, I really don't care how much I make, just as long as I have heat, food and a shelter I'm genuinely happy.

Always give up if you don't enjoy the work with the exception that you depend on it for cashflow. The analogy being, don't let go of your current shield until you have a second one to pick up.
I agree totally.

In the offline world if you wanted to earn 3,4,5x for instance average income you would probably have to go to college then uni and then work your way up some firm.
Thats a lot of time and money there don’t expect immediate results folks.

I see it as the wrong advice completely from the get go.
Would you tell someone who is complaining about their life to never give up? No, because, they continue doing nothing to make it better.
Would you tell someone who is failing at xyz to never give up? Maybe, but it's very situational and can go either way

As someone who had to manage multiple team of over 25+ people at any one time.
I have never given the "never give up" advice, not once. Nor have i given it to any of my friends, whether it is money advice, friendship or love.
The rule of thumb for me is, If I can't be bothered to sit & listen to the issue, I shouldn't be giving any them advice to begin with.
Or if you don't know the pressure, don't meddle in it.
There isn't really 1 quote/advice that solves all issues.

Just my 2 cent

Just curious that's all.
I mean surely there's people who 'Never gave up' and died sad and broke?

Is there more to that popular phrase I wonder...
i think that phrase has ruined many people. it is like a 50 year old says that he wants to run a 100 m dash under 15 seconds, while he never ran before. some shit ain't gonna happen, regardless how hard you try.

those phrases and books like the "the secret" have ruined many lives. many fall in these trap thinking that just by believing in themselves, things will work out and they will achieve their goals. without hard work, adaptation, right mind set, it will not work. many of those folks lack the hard work part.

if the goal is not realistic or achievable, no degree of "not giving up" will work.

point yourself in that direction, focus on your goals and never give up.

I just got done reading atomic habits. pretty good book. one major lesson learned was not to focus on the goal, but the journey. suggest to watch the book summary on youtube. this one is pretty good

also here is a related portion of this book

You are basically satisfying your ego by giving advice

It depends on how you interpret it.

If you just refuse to give up but choose not to learn anything from your mistakes, you're just being stubborn.

But if you keep trying and continue to learn, success is only a matter of time.

I wish you the greatest success, OP.
