Do grades matter ?

I do my higher diploma of marketing studies + a digital marketing strategy certification for 1 year in total, I hope it's worth it

Completely depends . But mainly you need balance. No point studying 12 hours a day if you're incapable of talking to customers or your boss finds you dull.

I will answer your question in simple words:

Yes and No both.

Grades have their own value in the market where they are needed.
You will fail 90% of the time if you have skills but no grades in that market.

Alternatively their is another market here where skills matter most. Here grades are mostly useless.

I see people near me trying to get into the best colleges, study 10 hours a day and do some really crazy stuff just for the goal that they would land a very high paying job in the future which they don't care if they are passionate about.

Also, they take up some crazy loans of like $20-50k for their graduation. After they get a job, they spend quite a few years paying off that debt.

I don't see the point why people are still going after things like this and why does a college degree / high grades matter at all ?

Here's an example of a very popular exam in India,

More than 10 lakh people appear for the UPSC exam every year.
Out of that, about 10,000 of them qualify for the mains.
Out of that, about 2000 of them qualify for the interview.
Out of that, about 700 of them get various posts, including IAS.
That's a funnel with a 0.000007% conversion rate.
This is not just for UPSC. I can make a similar funnel for engineering, MBA, CA etc and we will probably get similar conversion rates.
Why do people still do it then?
And after prepping for so long be it for UPSC, JEE, or CA and they don't make it; at the end of it, they don't even have a skill they can use in the real world. They are left with no skills and no job and a sunken investment (tuitions, books etc.). The opportunity cost is too high.
(80% of the people don't do it because they're passionate about it)

Every single day, I see new content creators popping up and people who changed their career from being a 9-5 person or whatever to something they like doing.

Has a college degree, high grades in school ever helped you in a way which IM hasn't when the main goal for *most* of the people is just to make more money ?

Grade matters - for those who has no inclination to learn the basics and do step jump and eventually spoils their time of learning.
Grade does not matters - for those who are self motivated and filled with learning interest and wants to beyond the regular so as a result they wins the long race but for them grade is nothing

Yes but still the Job market relies on Grades. It's value does not diminish with skills and experience over time but rather priority becomes less.

You get a very small amount of degrees which can actually help you get a job for example Doctor or Dentist themed degrees they will generally help you get a job but most others generally do nothing to help you overall. To date I can name no one my age who has a degree and it helped them most I know who did are either unemployed or working places in places like Mcdonalds or other low end paid jobs.

I'll say this just from own experience and my own point of view. So, high school, college diplomas and good grades are just formalities to add to your CV, they guarantee nothing in real life, not a job or a high paying salary, unless you want to work in the public sector for the government, they do check these things, but in the private sector, all what matter is two things: experience and connections.

Overall i think MOST people shouldnt go to college. College is a scam a lot of people are finally realizing that ( i realized that 10 years ago when i decided not to go).

Many of my friends went - most of them are in debt, and most of them are not even working in their profession. I make more money than most of them as well (and i dont have debt, other than my beer debt to @BassTrackerBoats which ill probably make him pay anyway).

Another funny fact - one of my friends studied computer science, and couldnt find a job for 2 years. My other friend has no college degree and got a job in the same field, based on his experience with coding.

Most people go to college to delay their decision of what to do with their life imo. There are exceptions. but thats most ppl.

Grades do matter if you are trying to get to the top companies and have a good salary package.

Grades don't matter if you want to be an entrepreneur.

Having a grads certificate will make it much easier to geta job.


How do I know? I have been through the same system.

IMO no, it's all about the type of person you are, a driven person with zero qualifications is more likely to achieve than a lazy person with grades.

University/College nowadays is a scam IMO, like Tai Lopez courses but more expensive

Thats the funny part... getting a degree (meaning spending 4 years and over 100K) is not a guarantee to get you anything... lol
College in the US especially became a business.. its gross the prices they charge for the degrees here.

Well I maybe will have an opposite view in this thread, but I think digital marketing is only one part of the puzzle. I think it's important to learn the fundamentals also, for example do a proper market research is not something I was able to learn alone on internet properly so I guess it's good to know what you are doing and see if their is a market about what you are selling, I doubt learning only SEO is enough, but maybe I am wrong completely it depends of your goals.

I value the local market and would like to sell nationally so it would be interesting to see if my diploma will have his importance in creating my own business... Normally it's the case But I agree that you should not put yourself in debt and sell one arm only to have a piece of paper, it's the knowledge that is important.
