Most important factor for SEO

Most important factor is google love. It they does not loves your site - good on-page seo and strong expensive backlinks does not helps.

As example:
My site 1 with niche irrelevant backlinks, mostly web2.0 and spam comments - ranks on page #1 position #3.
My site 2 with niche relevant paid and very strong backlinks - does not ranks on any position.

I would say compelling content without that people will not engage .

In my opinion content and link. No for bulk linking, but for quality.

The most important thing is your content. If Google thinks your page is relevant for other users you will rank good. You also need enough traffic on your page. But strong backlinks can help too for sure.

Very much agree. Backlinks these days are so over-rated. I have ranked the keyword "hottest black pornstars" on page one with zero backlinks. Just content.

decent content with good backlinks,
It all depends on the completion and niche actually

I'd say content first, then backlinks. Your content must be useful, unique, optimized and relevant to what users search. I once wrote a few high quality articles and posted them on a blog with pretty much no backlinks and they ranked first for some generic short tail keywords.

Links right now, but after the Google May update, there will not be as significant as content and mobile page speed will probably take priority for a while to force site owners to fix content and mobile page speed problems.

Well, if it really has to be just one thing...then my answer is "quality". Just that...quality. At the end of the day if you have great content, but rubbish backlinks...or vice versa, then it's not going to work for you. So, whether you focus on content...or backlinks...or social...or whatever...make sure it is quality and you won't go far wrong. (I'm guessing that wasn't quite the answer you were expecting).

Internal & external linking + Quality Content. These are the most imperative factors for SEO.

If only one, onsite.

Links have a place but I don't think they play that much of a factor anymore - not in the way they used to. Don't get me wrong they are still important but I don't think it takes no.1

There is no 'the most important factor'. Many factors together make a difference, not one thing.

if you had to chose one factor to work on for your SEO, what would it be ?
Content first. No content means no SEO. After content everything else follows. Assuming content is there and well optimized; links next.
