Expiring domain poaching, based on list?

Though, keep in mind, that if those domains are worth anything, they will be either:
- Go to auctions automatically before expiry - Godaddy. Lately even Namejet and Dropcatch.
- Dropcaught automatically by big companies. Dropcatch, Namejet, etc.
- Preordered and then dropcaught by big companies.
- Preordered by multiple people, dropcaught and then entering a public auction.
You can snatch something half decent here and there, but it's a numbers game. And speed game. Unless you yourself are a registrar company, you will already be playing this game with significant handicap.

You used to be able to do it back in the day, but the big boys cut us all out of the deal. As was said above, some cool ones slip through, but the really good ones are snapped up by the registrars themselves.

I'd be ok paying for the domains at auction. Primarily interested in a niche-specific set of domains.

Then your best call is to backorder them from Dropcatch.
I figured out how to do it with Domain Hunter Gatherer. Found a bunch of domains, some that I want and others that I don't. Does it make sense to register the ones I don't need and put them up for auction on godaddy or something? I found a couple clean domains with DA 40+ and TF 20+. They're Japanese tho, so I'm not sure how I would use them. Any ideas?

Nobody will buy former Japanese PBN. There's a reason why those domains are not registered. Maybe 5 - 6 years ago you would sell something on auctions, but trust me, you are definitely not first, nor thousandth person who came up with this idea.

If you want a rule of thumb metric, then it's number of referring domains. Which, basically, isn't a metric at all, rather a fact.
