Choosing the right web hosting company doesn't guarantee a rankings boost, but it does mean you avoid the consequences, and they can be significant ones, of choosing the wrong hosting. Therefore, you need to choose carefully and not base your decision on price alone.

Page speed will be a ranking factor in 2021, so you must chose the fastest hosting for your targeting audience.
If you plan to build a website that will target US/CA you most likely need to get a server in USA.
As an example, i had my website hosted in NL, although i was targeting US audience, i was getting most of my visitors from US but i got lots from EU, after a few months i switched to a US server(from the same company), my US traffic boomed and the EU traffic started decreasing.

It have a major impact:
1. The uptime is very important: If your website is down 3 times per day, you will never rank properly.
2. The speed: G focus on the user satisfaction. If your website loads very slow, the user will get off it quickly. G penalize slow sites.
3. How many websites and what kind of websites are hosted there: If you're on a shared hosting, and split that virtual space with a bunch of "bad" websites (penalized by G, etc), your website will be affected (because you share the same IP with the others). So try to avoid the shared hosting as much as possible.
When you are choosing your hosting provider, invest some time to search about that company (BHW&Reddit are great places to find enough answers).

It's more about UX than ranking, but you need good and reliable hosting that can handle the traffic and some more.

Unless not listed in SH what you have been told is not true.
Half websites are behind CF which is the paradise of P*rn, Hacking, Torrenting and other not so "good quality domains" yet they have no issue with ranking.

I will repeat my self.. half of the today internet is behind CloudFlare and CloudFlare is Paradise of illegal or hard porn domains all are using CF nameservers -> IPs. Others are using CDNs and other free DNS services.Unless the IP is not in SH.. the chances of that IP to get blacklisted from Google are limited. Your website IP have to be with long rekt history in order Google to consider blacklisting it.. also they are not mentioning which shared hosting they used for the experiment. You see not all shared hosting are equal.. especially free hosting one.
Note: I'm not defending shared hosting providers as our primary service is VPS hosting. But we have to take all facts.
