Chess Puzzle

The solution is the only way to solve this. Rook must check queen first, then black only has 3 options for defence. There are 3 ways to mate depending on the defence. Mate in 2 each time.

How do you counter white rook checking king on the chess engine?

I only see 3 defences and I have mates for all of them.

Tbh I think I got it.

I hate to admit defeat(I'm stubborn as hell). But I'm starting to think you're right.

All chess puzzles rely on you forcing the opponent to make a move. Whether its moving the king or forcing him to take a piece. This one doesn't seem to work for any of them.

My solution is mate in 2 for 3 different ways - how is that not a solution?

Once rook checks the only 3 options are rook blocks, knight/bishop blocks, queen moves up and to the left.

There is a mate for each of those defences if I'm not mistaken?

Bishop E4, your turn. You probably only saw the ones with the knight, rook or walking king to D6 :)

If black blocks white rook check with own rook it won't work. Black king can get out of check.

Doesn't work, black blocks the check with the bishop and it's now white in check, so still no mate in one turn of blacks as per op

Yeah I think you're right actually. Looking over it, but seems king placed so that bishop can always countercheck if rook moves.

I'm pretty sure you're right. Excluding the bishop checking king, the 3 mates I had work, but as long as that king is only blocked by the rook, there's no attach with the rook that ends in mate.

Good spot mate - bet playing you in a game would be worthwhile.

Most probably not, haven't played in ages, am as rusty as it gets.

That's the problem though, the bishop can check the white king, creating an additional move.
Does one of your proposals work without forcing black to make a technical blunder?
