1. can you explain "I'm seeing exceptional results from the more aggressive anchors"
2. what third party site do you look at to see % of the exact match anchors of the competitors in using the primary keyword?
3. How often do you have to go above that percentage to get to the top result? OR do you still stay moderate in using the exact matches and instead use other fine tuning to get to the top position?
There is no ratio you should follow. That's all SEO pop-science. It sounds great on paper and looks really high-end to clients, so people love that sort of thing
In the real world, google isn't ranking based on simple formulas. There's so much at play. Even more now with DeepRank.
Using more exacts will NOT get you the top result. Trying to force-rank your site with exact match anchors is one of the best ways to hammer it down to page 3-4 when you get to the top of page 2 to bottom of page 1.
In 2016-2017 I would use 70-80% brand/naked, mostly homepage links and a few lsi's.
On pbns that is. Because that ranked sites better than using more aggressive anchors.
Now. I use target/lsi anchors pretty much 97% of the time. If a client orders 8-9 links I would do 8-9 target to inner pages, MAYBE, 1 brand to the homepage. If they order 12-13, I might do 1-2 to the hompeage with a brand and the rest inner pages with target/lsi.
Target is a phrase I use meaning it generally contains one of the main keywords, but it's a longer phrase. Like..
If your keyword is "content marketing", then the exact would be "content marketing". What I'd call a partial would be "content marketing guide". Generally I only classify partial as having 1-2 extra words, so it's quite aggressive. Then target would be things like
"this content marketing guide on blahblah"
"make sure to read their content marketing guide"
Longer, more natural, but still "targeted"
LSI technically would not contain "content marketing", an LSI would be
"learn how to market your content properly"
Generally an LSI is saying the same thing, but not using the core keyword phrase.
So these days, I find great results using mostly lsi/target to inner pages.
Remember. You should still have PLENTY of homepage brand/naked anchors. There's no "ratio", but you still want a good chunk of brand/naked. Especially naked, they are actually more common for small/medium sites than brand.
So all your cheap guest posts, make them brand/naked to the homepage.
Your niche edits and pbns, 90-95% to inner pages, especially INFO pages, non-commercial. Don't just hammer your money pages. Make it look natural
