I insist that what we've seen the past 30+ days aren't updates, but Google trying to fix whatever's broken on their end.

I'm just going to come out and say it, either they are undoing all the changes they made for political reasons (ie: censorship) since the political season is over, or they are battening down the hatches getting ready for war. I don't think there is a 3rd option quite frankly.
