You can use any theme which supports blog functionality. WP gets pretty slow once you start hitting 10-20 news posts daily. I know because I manage a news site where I've published around 4.5k news articles.

I have heard people saying, " the theme has to be a magazine " else it wont be considered as news. Are you using GP for your news site?
