You're quick to judge based on your first impression. But w/e, there are enough gurus so that everyone can find one who fits his taste.

I don't think anyone should be looking for an SEO guru for a guidance. That term is just bad.
The guy has bunch of ads and pop-ups on his site and same approach being used for his niche sites. I did check how his site is doing as I said it before. Also, there is zero siloing or anything on that site. It's just a basic theme stuffed with articles under "uncategorized".
Did check a sample article as well. Article of 2600 words which has 19 images from which 16 are display ads. Just no care for the user at all.
I did get enough of a first impression. Haven't seen his other sites as I did not know the guy before, but someone shouldn't slip like that.
All I'm saying is that it's an approach that shouldn't be replicated.

I respect that. As I wrote earlier, there are certain aspects like his banners I don't like either. And you're certainly right that no one should just copy 1:1 what any guru is saying. That's why I get my inspiration in many places and don't hold anything for the whole truth. As for Jon Dykstra, he makes good money so he does something right, e.g. he uses Pinterest with great success which is how I learned about him in the first place. The banner and ads stuffing is certainly questionable, although other "gurus" like Spencer Haws have pretty spammy looking niche websites, too, which makes me wonder a bit how they are able establish trust with the reader...

Well for SEO gurus it's more of flashy banners, fake stats, loud talking, a lot of hand action when talking, using bunch of important words and not that much of actual SEO lol.
They are pure salespeople. As long as they can sell no matter what, it's all good for them.
But such people are in any money making industry.

a number of hand full of gurus are real and legit. even most of their work becomes outdated with in a short time. There's loads of unreal onces also out there.

Most of what he posts is really obvious and pretty valueless like most really big names. They keep the stuff that works to themselves or for their course/ebooks etc.
I've read through a lot of Neil Patel's blog and have yet to find anything remotely useful or unique.

You need to be careful with the 'gurus' you find online, there are many charlatans out there which pretend to be experts in the SEO field, but they're only good at branding themselves and taking your money...
Hence I recommend @splishsplash because he's extremely smart when it comes to UNDERSTANDING google algorithm and 100% honest and reliable. Help us a ton, can't stress enough how I love this guy.
But don't take my words for granted, just follow his activity on BHW to conclude your own decision.

Matthew Woodward - My personal favorite. Some consider him Black Hat. Either way, he's damn good.
Charles Floate - Not everyone's cup of tea, but the kid is talented AF
Servando Silva - A lesser name, but a deep thinker in the industry (& runs some impressive case studiies/SEO experiments
I used to believe the hype about the stuff Google said. Then I read around. I suggest doing the same.

There is no SEO guru anymore, in the old days, Google algo is not mature enough, there are so many tricks and methods to be exploited, thus so many people came up from the surface suddenly, they made quick and huge money and be called like a hero or even legendary SEO.
There are too many people can fall into that category, just too many, even too many hidden guys in this forum made millions in that wild western period, so you can't say who is guru who is not, because just too many in the old days, they all have their own stories and sharp eyes.
And for now, algorithm is mature enough, you can't rank good and make a lot of money without a lot of money to invest before that happen, and if you have money, you can beat any guru, just hire best quality writers, write best quality contents, buy best quality links, then you can rank anything.
But hell yeah, if you are really new to SEO, and want to learn sth very basic, some good places can be like - backlinko, gaps and details, niche pursuits, authority blogs from industry giants like ahrefs, semrush, moz blog, seo news from searchroundtable, SEjournal, just name a few.
