How to set up a proxy in your browser

You can never know how any open available proxy reacts.
Open proxies are either a) hacked computers or b) wrong configured proxies.

In case a) the longtime stability is usualy low, the owner gets a bandwidth bill and stops the proxy b) once the admin finds the error the proxy might suddenly be non anonymous or locked

I'd test them every day you plan to use them to be sure you don't send your real IP and possibly ruin all the work you invested

Port is the bit on the end after the colon.

123.456.78.9:7777

7777 would be the port.

Usually proxy lists are posted that way, you can see that on this very forum in the proxy list section linked to this one.

If you don't have the port number, you're hosed.

I am also trying to learn about proxies and i was wondering how are people able to get the proxies and sell them.

I mean can you just hack someone computer and get there ip address and sell the proxy they have.

If you did this what happens when they use there own computer with the same proxy/ip address.

Is a proxy the same as a ip address? thanks so much for any help

This isn't a forum for illegal breaking and entering, so I can't exactly walk you down that road. Howsomever, at base, it's much more than figuring out someone's IP address.

The particular ports to be used as a proxy service have to be opened and configured for proxy usage on that machine. So even if you know the machine's IP, you still have to get those ports opened and ready.

For someone connecting to a proxy on Firefox, do they have to set up any fort forwarding on their end, or does firefox do all the work?

As long as you've set it to the right type (Socks proxies in the Socks box etcetera) and the proxy of course works, there shouldn't be any other problems.

Do you know how to set up Thunderbird to use a proxy? I set it up and got it to work last night with Cloakfish proxies. But, I changed a few settings in an attempt to make things work better and now I cannot get Thunderbird to send through my proxy to save my life! I have tried every possible variation of settings that I can think of. Any ideas?

ALERT: If anonymity is your goal, never use a proxy without first testing it. Proxies die quickly and/or their status can change momentarily from anonymous one minute to transparent the next.

Follow the same directions as posted by ape. The first website you attempt to surf to, a login prompt will pop up asking for a username and password.
