Whats you biggest SEO mistake?

Google is a large company and it plays dirty - that is why it is such a large company.

There are too many 'white hat' sites that are regularly taken down by their majestic updates - a few of my sites included. Also, some people buy just a few backlinks here and there and have their sites taken down by updates - a few of my sites included. Black hat sites blasted with many more-or-less spammy backlinks featuring outdated content also get taken down by the updates - but few such sites that I follow are still going on strongly in very competitive niches.

Now, imagine having a site with 200-300 or more articles, guides, reviews, with social pages etc. (white as snow), regularly added new content, regularly updated 'old' pages, that is starting to gain in momentum after few years of hard labor, being taken down by some Google's Zoo update for who knows what reasons.

And site(s) in the same niche with 25-30 pages, old outdated content, but each page having at least 30+ spammy backlinks, being on positions 1-3 for many 1k+ keywords with buying intention - dear big G FCK U ... excuse my language :(

and that is why I said that my biggest mistake was following google's guidelines. I am not saying that we should all make shitty 20-30 pages sites and spam them to death, but ...

So what would you suggest ? I mean, I wanna try dabble into creating my first SEO site, but from what I've read on this and many other threads, unless you have thousands to invest monthly on SEO, there's no way a noob can rank. Is that true or... ?

Thanks

Well there isn't anyone biggest mistakes but a lot of small mistakes making it cumulatively a big one. First would be starting the blogging so late, second would be despite starting not optimising the images used in the blogs. Not only that the contents i wrote were very small in length should have been longer and more fine tuned. Quantity matters a lot for a website but that doesn't mean that quality doesn't matter. Both should be considered equally.

It completely depends on the niche. If you're hoping into a competitive niche then you're probably going to need to invest some money in order to outrank your competitors .

If you're choosing a low competition niche then you probably don't need to invest that kind of money.

I should prioritize buying good domain, for my project.

well, this has been already answered, but for short - keyword research, don't put all your eggs in one basket, but also don't spread yourself too thin. And, never, but really never invest what you can't afford yourself to lose ...

personally, I have sites in a few niches and in every niche at least 2-3 independent sites - maybe this is not large dataset, but I can't come with any conclusion regarding content length, how often to update articles, how many and how strong links should be, etc. total mess, thanks to Google :)

You can't learn to swim until you get wet ... so, create 2-3 sites and start the 'game' - good luck ....

Listening to seo Gurus and "SEO principles" and messing up when actually the contrary proved an efficient strategy.
