Expired Domain or Not - Help!

So, I'm torn between using an expired domain for a new idea I have, or use a fresh one. I have a domain which belongs in a similar niche market. So far so good but the problem is most competitors in the niche use partial domain names with the keyword obviously in (so,if the niche is matresses they use matress or bed,etc. You get the idea). And my domains are mostly brandable without the main keyword. Only the big guys use authoritative brandable names. If I use a brandable domain name I have to expand the niche later on.
Imagine if your niche is about cars and your name is excitingtoys .com or something like that.

I absolutely don't understand this logic. Just because you have EMD/PMD doesn't mean that you have to expand or not expand your site to other niches.

EMDs and PMDs are completely irrelevant and there's barely any benefit (I doubt there is any myself really) from them. Just because some "big guys" use EMD/PMD domains and rank is a coincidence.

Also, don't start money sites on "similar niche" domains and stick with the ones that are actually relevant.

Just because people pay $10K for a domain, doesn't mean it's not utter shit. People have absolutely no idea how to evaluate and check the domains properly. I have seen it million times here on the forum.

The domain I am talking about belonged to a startup with all kinds of solid links in the tech space. Over 3000 RD with an insanely high DR and other metrics. Very high-quality domain.

I can't remember the name, unfortunately. The domain was auctioned in 2017/2018, can't remember when exactly. I have also seen a lot of expensive 4 figure domains perform poorly in the SERPs.

If you know what you are doing, the domain will almost always perform well. There are always exceptions, but Plus, I've definitely seen more fresh domains with $XY K spent on offsite SEO performing poorly as well.

If you know what you are doing, the domain will almost always perform well. There are always exceptions, but Plus, I've definitely seen more fresh domains with $XY K spent on offsite SEO performing poorly as well.

Not saying they don't perform well. I have also seen plenty of auction domains that perform really well. But, for someone who's just getting started, I believe a fresh domain is a better and less risky option. OR they could buy a good aged domain from vendors like you or others on the forum who have already done the vetting beforehand.

I agree to some extent, but even then, newbie doesn't have to screw around with offsite SEO when he goes with a bigger domain. That imo imposes a much bigger risk than the domain itself. Of course, there's the other option as well, but I am not fan of shilling my services if it's uncalled for.

Example, I have say a domain in outdoors( plenty of sub niches). So why not use this domain to build a new site in say, camping ( still outdoors and some what relevant to the bigger niche category)

I know the backlinks are not relevant, however I could keep or make a few articles that will keep the connection with the old niche, and then build towards the new one. Surely what means "similar" to me, doesn't possibly mean the same in the eyes of ggl.

Well, the wider you go from the exact niche, the lower the chance of the domain actually working.

That's the one of the reasons why you pick domain first and pick niche based on it second. Other way around you just complicate your life.
