Today while doing some research for work I stumbled upon this article:
Code:
https://alphainvestors.com/business/best-display-ad-networks/

The article supposes to be about 5 'best' display ad networks, but it only mentions one ad network - AdSense.

I see a lot of confusion among publishers (and even ad network representatives) in the traffic arbitrage field - such articles are part of the reason. What's even more confusing that these guys who write such articles have a limited understanding of what they talking about and even fail to read the 'about us'. That's just silly...so I decided to write this thread and explain it in simple terms.

An online advertising network or ad network is a company that connects advertisers to websites that want to host advertisements. The key function of an ad network is an aggregation of ad supply from publishers and matching it with the advertiser's demand. (Wiki)

Companies like: Ezoic, Mediavine, Monumetric, Adthrive are not ad networks, but mediation companies.
The primary purpose of these companies - is split testing, improving your current results.

- What does it mean? How is it different from Ad Network (AdSense)?

This means that the primary goal of these companies to help you optimize your ads: user experience, placement optimization, remnant inventory optimization, etc. You pay % from your earnings.

Yes, these companies can and do provide you with additional ad demand - and charge % from your earnings for that.
It's not bad, every ad network, ad exchange, and mediation company takes % from your earnings as long as you make profit - it's good!

- Who should use such companies?

The mediation company is in between just starting publishers that just using AdSense and managing their own ad server.
In other words, it's for those who already grown out of AdSense, not grown big enough to run their own server.

When you just started and your site is new and/or have a low traffic, you're not 100% on your direction with the site (and traffic arbitrage overall), AdSense is an a-okay network to start and test with.

Once your site starting to grow, you receive a lot of traffic, and you don't want to sell your inventory at a minimum price to AdSense anymore - you need to set up a server to maximize your ad revenue. Ad server helps you running multiple ad networks on your site simultaneously, create custom setup based on your site needs, and run bid auctions to increase rate per each ad impression.

Example Scenario 1:

You have a website with a single ad network (AdSense or any other) - you get default CPM whatever ad network gives you - e.g. $1 CPM

Example Scenario 2:

You have a website with the ad server and you run multiple ad networks- Instead of selling inventory at a default price to the ad network, Ad server requests bid for this particular use among all ad networks and displays only the network with the highest rate.

As the end result, you sell your inventory on average 25%-50% higher rate, and your final CPM rate would be $1,50 vs $1.

The numbers above are just an example.

BUT: Managing own ad server requires a lot of knowledge, understanding of the process, and technical skills. It involves much more than just coding. It's also pretty expensive! if you hire someone to do it for you.

This is where companies like the ones mentioned above come in - they provide mediation of your ads and even provide some of their own demand for a fee.

The pros: you only share % of your revenue, as long as you earn everyone is happy.
The cons: you pay % on top of what ad network already charges you; no option to have completely custom setup; limited ad partners.

While this could work as a good solution for some publishers, I personally prefer running own server and have full control of the sitatuation (and not to share extra %).

Thanks for your posting this beginner guide, I feel so cool after read this, very detailed.

You are 100% right! I agree with your point bro. These are not ad networks they are ad serving partners they only analys our site and puts thier best placements of ads by our Adsense that's it

Thanks for this. This is quite informative. I was actually just reading up on ad.plus and Ad Thrive. This was literally about 10 seconds before popping back on BHW to check the recent activity.

Can you please elaborate on this a bit? How does this work?

Assuming you have a vast experience in the field, which you find the "best" network?

1) mediavine - 50k session and up to $30 rpm
2)adthrive - 100000 page views and up to $20 rpm
3)monumetric 10000 page views and 10 - 20 rpm
4)ezoic depends but I would say at least $10 rpm

Ad Networks make revenue by taking a percentage of your earnings.
For example, this is what AdSense rev share looks like:

BlRkk40z7UDbhGuq3RUDe5Fb32QGN2SpmHdZ-fZ8pgghmzve9kC0ztZVLbrkOM0D0coO6-EK=w395

When you see data in your dashboard, it's already NET income.
The mediation platforms also include their fee in the demand they offer
This is normal business practice.

These all require adsense accounts or good understanding with google if you’re banned by google boom these won’t take you in which is really painful

That is to wade off unworthy publishers.
Some publishers take a lot of time to onboard and in the end they make $1 a day - it doesn't worth the effort, even on 50% share. Rasing requirements brings more or less worthy sites.

There is no such thing as the best ad network as networks don't pay on fixed fees (only some of them do).

As an advertiser, you provide targetting criteria for your ads and you set bids CPM/CPC for your ads. Advertisers set a different budget on their campaigns and different bids. If you have traffic matching advertisers with the high bids, you will get more revenue per 1000 impressions. All networks exchange their demand, one network can pull the ad from another (reseller) network.

In simple words - networks will perform differently on different sites, it may perform really well for one, and really bad for another. Success depends on matching high-performance traffic.

There is no solution as to working with a single network and earning highest CPM/CPC rate. Working with a single network will always mean you're losing/not making most revenue from the same traffic.

The right question would be: "How to squeeze maximum revenue from Ad Network?" - and the answer would be - running own ad server with header bidding solution. Header Bidding runs auction between all networks set in your server and displays only network with the highest bid. Own ad server can also help increase your rates & revenue technically by adjusting and tuning each ad.

Hello,
I applied for ezoic yesterday, but I was rejected " has been deemed to be prohibited and hasn't been approved to use Ezoic's Monetization features. Examples of sites like this include (but are not limited to):

adult content
enabling dishonest behavior
dangerous products or services
This violates our basic ad policy requirements— bullet ‘c’—prohibited content. We will not be able to assist you with ad serving, and you are not able to reapply.”

This is an automated content site, how can I improve or which server should I join ?
Every day, there are more than 1000 visitors, 50% from the United States.

Thank you for your time,
Huang
