Good for you man! I suspect your appreciation for music will increase even further the more you explore musical instruments. It can be extremely therapeutic -- and like your trip on acid, I would say you can feel "one with the moment\universe" while you are in a state of musical practice, a deeper sense of connection. (probably activating right-brain hemispheres which relate to oneness)
Keep in mind that testing the waters on "Piano" need not be expensive, to start out you can grab a used MIDI Keyboard for anywhere from $40 - $100 off the classifieds sites (possibly eBay too). Then you can pop in the USB cable into your PC\laptop and open up a multitude of software to get piano sounds (or even have the keys make digital music of all kinds of instruments.)
You can also get some old Yamaha non-midi keyboards for cheap cheap every so often -- I've seen them go for $30 and $40 incl. a stand (those have speakers and don't plug into the computer.)
From my experience, Piano is very nice for learning things like music theory -- the notes are laid out in sequence ABCDEFG with a clear pattern that is easy to follow. The Fretboard on a guitar however is a totally different story... feels like a clusterfuck of madness o_0
Marty Schwartz on YouTube is a good resource for your beginner journey of guitar (especially acoustic.) GuitarZoom is great for scales\riffs\some theory and especially electric guitar stuff. I suggest learning the "CAGED" system, practice different pick styles (sequential and alternating) and strumming patterns, and just let yourself get used to using the instrument.
Most important thing -- ENJOY yourself, even if it sounds like shit at first and you mess up a lot. People spend 20 or even 40 years on Piano for example and are still mastering their craft -- its a lifelong journey
