I?m not really in the domain game but I always view domains like classic cars ? they are worth what someone will pay for it.
If you have a plan to develop a site around the domain and that?s the best domain you can find to fit your business then it?s worth it. If you?re planning on flipping the domain, it might be awhile before someone offers you more than $8.5k.

the answer is NO

it doesn't have history at all (web*archive*org). this means it is new domain.

it doesn't have link popularity.

it worth no more than $9 without the discount.

if you duy domains from other people,

  • look for the domain age - you want to buy old domains (more than 1 year)
  • look for link popuarity - the more, the better, it also means it is not banned
  • see if it is in dmoz, yahoo dir - this means you are buying reviewed quality name
  • check for the pagerank of the domain - again, the more the better

and some other things that you don't need if you don't want to sell it later -

how many times the domain changed its IPs

how many times it changed the name servers

if it is with dashes (-) or not (if you are doing seo and you don't want to sell it later you don't care about that, but it still can change the price)

if the domain is keyword phrase or brandable domain.

if it is brandable name, check if it is trademarked already (don't buy trademarks)

and other things, that i would like to hear other members talk about.

8 grand? I can think of a lot better things to invest that money in.

I might be the crazy one, but... I would think a domain like that would be worth a fortune if you really put the work into it. It's a common enough name that you could make it a huge portal, like priceline or orbitz. You'd have to really focus on it to build it into something worth a damn, but I'd think bigger companies would be super-hungry to snatch it from you for a ridiculous amount if you built it into something nice.

All of this is true except for the fact that he/she says its only worth the $9. This domain in my opinion is not worth 8.5K unless your an end user that desperately needs it to develop a website. But that doesnt mean that this domain would never be worth 8.5K without developing. If you bought it for that much and spent a lot of hard work searching and advertising for an end user you can fetch much more for it.

I just purchased a domain for reg fee a couple of months ago and turned around and sold it for 1.5K to an end user. Just because you purchased it for reg fee does not mean its only worth reg fee. A domain does NOT have to have history or backlinks to be valuable, although it is very helpful.

I will buy that domain for no more than 10 dollars.

Check this page to see how much your domain approx worth

Amen.

You have to sell the potential of the domain, like an empty lot in real estate. The land itself isn't really worth much, till you consider the location and what it could have on it.

That's exactly what I was trying to get across. A name like that is really worth it if you're willing to put the time in and develop it, it's extremely easy to remember and could very feasibly be worth a bundle with the right backing.

Hey guys!
Thanks for the quick responses. The guy that wanted to sell it to me said I could have it for that fixed price before he would put it on the sedo list. Well apparently he took a chance and tried to make a quick buck from me. The only way I would invest the money in that domain was if I could flip it.

I lift my hat once again, and I say thanks.

it does cost 9 dollars at the moment. that is what i say.
it is crazy to buy brand new domain, without age, without site, without link popularity, without pagerank if you want, without traffic... for 8.5k.

it is like buying pick axe, called "Gold Digger" for 8.5k, just because it can dig and maybe you will find gold some day.

This may certainly be worth the $8.5k investment however your reasons for buying it need to be established. I do not think it would be a good purchase if you only had flipping in mind, however if you had a solid business plan with a few hundred thousand in venture capital lying around, then you're talkin' ;)

The aforementioned statement about domains being like classic cars, and their worth in the eye of the buyer is the truth. You find the right end user, or collector and who knows what they will pay for a name.

Not at all....
They just register it on 29 April 08.

Don't buy it.

Its worth about the reg fee, its got no history, and really not a good name at all

I just got an appraisal for the domain from name boy - http://www.nameboy.com/nameboyappraisal/appraise-show.php?id=441694 - unfortunately they're generally considered to be far too generous in appraisals.

It's an interesting topic because on one hand you have metrics(PR, backlinks, age, overture score, dmoz indexed, ranking, etc) and then you have branding. An investor could legitimize spending that much if he already had a game plan and he was set on that name ready to promote the hell out of it. However in this specific case's intention(as a reseller) it would not be the best move in my opinion.

Checkout what estibot says- http://estibot.com/results.php?domain=taxiandhotel.com

ouch.

What I can recommend is;

1. Google a domain availability checker.
2. Look for variations with "taxi" "hotel" and see if any are to your liking.
3. Purchase the domain and;
-Park it
-Submit it to social bookmarking
4. The killer part is time. In the game of SEO "slow and steady" sometimes does win the race. Google appreciates the slow and steady process.

Additionaly you can hunt for expired domains and re-register them. These are the rare gems that will make you the $$$ in the longrun. You can buy a domain for less than $5. You can even used your $8.5k on some wicked, very blackhat SEO optimizing campains. My recent sites (less than 3 months old) already command @ least 1000 uniques a month.

Spend your money wisely.
