Google releasing a large update today

I totally agree. At this point, no one really knows what is going on with google and the update.

The data is there, you have to just look.

This update, like most before it is done to improve rankings of Google's own properties. sites.google.com websites doubled their traffic in this update. Just look at movers and shakers and you will get your answers.

PS: sites.google.com is gonna be a great parasite for sometime to come

I know that a user said a few days ago that this update may be due to a huge discrepancy between the follow and nofollow backlinks and I am starting to think that there may be some truth here. I checked again my backlink profile and while there is no intentional spamming, I saw that lots of shops have linked to some of my pages hundreds (or thousands) of times for each available language and the new Google algorithm may actually see it as a backlink profile (a spammy one). Do you think it's a good idea to disavow a large portion of the nofollow backlinks? Also could it also be related to the whole new USG/sponsored approach to the nofollow links?

I'll disavow some of my links, at this point I have nothing to lose, if I don't see an improvement I can always remove those links from the disavow file.
I'll do it in stages, disavow links from a couple of posts that have high exact anchor text. If I see an improvement I'll move on and disavow more links.
As I said, I have nothing to lose as at this point the ranking lost anyway.

I've read a few days ago on seroundtable that google doesn't put any time limit on links, if they go after links and anchor text, they go all the way back, NOT 2 or 3 years back. Although I have not bought any links in the past 3 years, there could some very old links that might be hurting my site/ranking.
I have good quality content, so there is not much I do with it. Maybe small adjustments here and there.

I'll not touch anything on my website as in my opinion its pointless. Either the ranks will get back to normal in the next few weeks or in the next G update.

If this update or part of it was about links/anchor text, you can wait forever for the ranking to come back.

Recently John Mueller was telling content marketers to change the link relationship of their guest posts links to nofollow. I'm beginning to suspect that most of the sites that go tanked have majorly do-follow links. Maybe building more nofollow links would help.

JM is talking shit. I think he doesn’t even understand how Google works. Always trying to intimidate that stuffing keywords and buying links doesn’t work. But if you would find low competition niche, stuffing keywords and some backlinks works like a charm. And I even didn’t started to speak about parasites.

Well, I spent a lot of time looking on Semrush and I saw that a lot of people who have good quality links lost rank and sites with low quality links or a small amount of links( new sites) are getting boosted. Maybe Google is fighting against guest posting. That is why PBN works well now?

If that is the case then that's quite anti-competitive. I just wonder whether or not any government agencies got the balls to take them down.

If you have the time could you check their anchor text, if it's mostly exact mutch or generic, and if the majority of their links are do-follow or no-follow?

When you guys say your keywords are continually dropping, as in a few positions each day?
Mine was in the top 3 and now it’s in the second page and it’s has been there for a few days, it’s not dropping further.

Yesterday: keyword #1 got bumped to page 2.
Today keyword #2 got bumped to page 2

All my other keywords are in their original position. It’s really strange because only certain pages are effected only.

if you are saying that your #1 keyword get the bumped to page 2, can you make a correlation that maybe you had over-optimized it? it seems that most people are seeing a downgrade of their primary keywords and not much change in their secondary keywords.

also, compared to number 1 position for your primary keyword, who has most of their backlinks from the country that you are trying to rank for?

I'm pretty sure that it's some kind of algo filter that sets you right back where you were before. Depending on the changes you had done, it actually might give you a clue what's holding you back.

Right. But it's not only about competition, google is also actively monitoring FB groups, forums like this to get ideas about what people are up to. Even if part of this forum would go deep undercover, they (G) would find a way to get in. Those G-bastards have turned the table around and are using our tactics against us But no matter what they do, they always play poker showing their hand, SERP never lies ... and it shows what's working and what does not.
