Latin Phrase for I came, I saw, I conquered.
I had 3 years of Latin in high school, 2 required the 3rd you had to be invited based on your grades.
My friends and I would use Latin all the time when playing sports against kids from other schools as that was not part of their curriculum. They had no idea what plays we were calling out when we used Latin.
But, let's get past that introduction.
I was reminded today about a magazine cover from a friend that I was on back in 1974 when I ran cross country. It was a random pic and nothing that related to the level of quality as a runner. I was a solid runner, ran a handful of marathons, was called the fastest guy in high school by a bunch of guys (I was not; there were others faster just not ones that could do the long distance stuff I did) and probably ruined my knees from 90 - 100 mile weeks.
The race (5K) was in Van Cortlandt Park in NY and I have no idea why we were up there as it was ages ago but I think it was some kind of regional event based on the time of year. I went to school 60 miles south of that area so it was certainly not a local event. I probably finished in the middle of the pack that day but do not really remember. I know for a fact I got no trophy for that event.
We ran against a lot of kids from New York City and those guys threw elbows, stepped on your shoes, pushed you if they could and was a very aggressive event... not something any of us expected and not something any of us who were private school guys from the Jersey Shore ever dealt with in the past.
I'll preface the following with the comment that I and all my teammates loved our coach and still do.
So, my buddies and I get the magazine (Runners World) see me on the cover and show our coach. Hey, "Coach Motz, check this out!".
His response was, "BTB, that magazine cover means nothing without a victory".
There goes all the wind out of my sails as I thought it was pretty cool. It was but it was "hollow cool".
All flash means nothing... you have to conquer.
If you want victory it should not be in the form of a trophy, magazine article, magazine cover (even if it was a random pic), accolades from people, fancy shoes, a Brioni suite or any other "fresh paint" covering.
It should be in the form of you taking your skill set and putting your site in a prominent spot in Google and well above your competition. Victory is in the results and not in the accolades.
Conquering is taking the rankings from your competitor and not from wearing a shiny suit of armor.
I have not spoken to Coach in years but I am sure if I told him what I was doing for a living he would ask me if I was #1 or just some generic guy making a living in my industry. And if I told him I was not #1 he would have me running an extra 5 miles on the boardwalk in Belmar to get my head straight.
Be victorious in what you are doing in IM.
If it SEO, kill it and out work the other guy.
If it is Social Media, create great content and get it shared by others so you can build your brand and accounts.
If it is providing services to others be the best and serve your clients like a 3 star Michelin restaurant.
If you want to win, you have to win.
Listen to Coach Motz, forget the bling as bling is nothing more than "look at me" and not anything of substance.
