I want to build an authority/affiliate site, what's the best way to get started?

I have a domain and hosting, whats next?

What are the fundamental theme/plugins/setup I need ?

I want to get this stuff nailed so can focus on learning how to create content and keywords etc

Best way to get started is not wasting time on brainstorming plugins. That will not make you money.

Learn how to do a keyword research. Then start working on writing articles. You want authority site? You should have at least a few thousand pages then.

And to some less gifted here - No, your 50 page site about cat collars isn't an authority site.

Would you say the 500 word articles limit is a thing of the past now? Should we focus on 2000+ word articles ?

I use both. It really depends on what I need them for. If it's an article that I want to rank for some decent keyword(s), then I go for 1500 minimum.

Content creation should also be thought out. It is worth checking first on a given phrase how many words have competition from TOP3 and build your article based on that. Each phrase needs a different number of words.

I just shared this post on here going over a few ways that you are able to promote your blog with most of the post being around keyword research and on page SEO and I go over the off-page SEO services I use and how I use them in this post on here from a month or so back that may be helpful.

1. Strong, evergreen and relevant backlinks to power your website.
2. Fresh and high-quality content that's actually readable and not stuffed with keywords. Constantly post new content and incorporate a strong internal linking strategy.
3. Create and establish a strong brand if you want to be a true authority website.

Before you start your SEO make sure your site is finished version 1! you don't want to be trying to manage SEO and building your website, theme/plugins/design etc. Once your site has 20-30 articles and you start doing SEO, then you will find it easier to manage your ongoing content publishing and marketing as part of your strategy.

You’re doing it backwards. Learn about the content, keywords and SEO first and then build your site on what you’ve learned.

Start with off-page, then you can focus on on-page.

Start with clicking the "log out" button. Then you can focus on throwing your keyboard out of the window.

If you have nothing to say, then stay silent. All you are doing is confusing newbies, telling them to first start building backlinks and then improve their onsite. What a load of massive steaming horse shit.

Sorry made an error because I have not slept!!! I meant start with on-page. Most essential is on-page.

after you can focus on off-page.

no need to be mean ;)

First start reading posts on backlinko.com IMO the go to guy when it comes to SEO.

3 main subject:
1. Research your competitor (make spesific goal how to outrank them, kw targeting, etc)
2. Quality content, mix off long detailed article with mix of info article
3. Backlink, make quality backlink from high authority branded site, preferred site with same niche

Next step is to get a loan from the bank at least 10-20k or even more so you can invest in your authority site because you should look on it as real business. You will spend money on the best content and best links, because this is not cheap if you want quality. Doing all alone if you are starter is very hard, but if you have money you can hire agencies to do all hard work for you.

1. Keyword research and create quality content with user intent and perfect on page optimization.
2. Build links from trusted sites to increase credibility of the site, build with pace and diversify backlink profile.
3. Promote it, interact with users and increase your brand awareness.

Thanks, I appreciate everyone's tips but I think you were the only one to pick up on what I was actually asking! I think I triggered a few people by using the word authority lol. I guess what I meant was explainer type of blogs.

I want to know how to set things up before I do the content and backlinks etc so I don't have to come back and re do it all.

For example, I will use Yoast SEO and Google analytics etc. Should I use something like genesis framework?

Or can literally any type of wp/site and themes have the same amount of success with content and SEO?

First of all, content is the most important one for it... choose long tail keyword concentrate on you back link.. be patient... focus on the clients... it will be quite enough
