What are your 3 biggest tips for starting SEO?

To add up... find good keywords. Work on page SEO. Have conerstone article (long one 2000 words) and the rest less words. On Page is crucial.

Some essential plugins that I install are:
all in one SEO - sitemap
cookie notice - required by law
really simple SSL - help stop any SSL issues
word fence - essential firewall
Easy Updates Manager - update all themes plugins
Whisper - interlinking
Autoptimize - optimization

In terms of which theme you should use, there are too many out there to suggest a good one, and you won't rank top spot, just because you have a certain theme, just play around with a few, maybe write a couple of dummy articles, to see what the site looks like. You want to be happy with how the site looks, and it should look good for your visitors too. Also, remember to stick a privacy policy up, with the t&c of your affiliate program.

Test everything you can on the site, like on mobile, testing menus etc. There can sometimes be just a make or break issue that will have you sticking with a theme or not.

Make a list of any things that you want to change in the theme, like removing footer etc, and get a Wordpress programmer to do that all in one go.

There are some good tips already on this thread. I would endorse:
1. Do several Google searches in your niche & check out the top ranking sites appearing - in the process, note the different keywords used - pay attention to long-tail words & synonyms
2. Develop your content plan, with a view to developing content silos
3. Post articles / posts - one post per long-tail keyword. Mix it up with short and long articles. Any related Youtube videos can also be posted
4. Then start backlinking using social media and Google properties including Youtube, using those same long-tail keywords (and do not forget to index these links / posts)

The above process and aim for quality over quantity.

If all you have is a domain and hosting then, the next steps (at least for me) would be...
  1. Keyword Research / Niche selection - If your domain is brand new, I would strongly suggest to heavily focus on low-competition keywords (Check KGR Keywords)
  2. Content - Don´t hold back when it comes to content. Make sure it´s high-quality, RELEVANT (matches the user´s search intent perfectly) and it´s layout to increase UX. In the beginning, focus on building topical relevance and on developing the type of content that attracts links naturally. Content like: Data heavy/ research, infographics, in-depth guides, etc.
  3. SEO Health - Never stop working on your site overall SEO health

Shall we re-introduce a bit of reality into this? Imagine you had a business plan and went to the bank for a loan. Before lending you the money the bank would want to see that plan and OK it for chances of success. They’re usually good at predicting failures – it’s part of their job.

Now substitute that for an online business. You’re entering a world of competition with millions of others doing the same thing. You’re relying on some else to produce the written content (product) for you. You’re relying on Google to promote that product (SEO) and you’re looking (hoping) for a revenue of $X amount of dollars per month from an audience (only you believe) it will attract.

Look at the success stories. What are they doing? They’re writing exceptional content first and later making money from it by premium memberships and webinars, or books, which will tell you to do what they’ve done.

Your content is the product, without which you’ll throw money into a bottomless pit believing you’ve just bought exceptional content for the price of two coffees, paid for overpriced mass produced SEO and bought a pile of cheap spammy backlinks that you believe will help you outrank the professionals.
 
I dont understand why many people after all Google updates especially the one from few days ago still think they can rank with few hundreds $, good keyword research and some on page optimization. Maybe if lucky you can.. but you will always pray that some brand with authority domain not write any article with your keywords or even mention ur kws in any topic. I had site perfectly optimized ranking 1+ years on #1 for many keywords, and recent google update took it all from me and placed sites with DR 70+ on top. Now I can cry or move to another niche but thats reality.. Dont get me wrong mate I wish you best luck with your work, but Im trying to save you time that you can’t buy when you lose it with any money. With SEO you always risk and its never safe.

This is not an easy journey to be honest. I have seen my fair share of hurdles. High quality content is the top and the most important thing you need for good traffic which would ultimately become of source of your earnings, do a thorough keyword research and then make strong backlinks of high authority to be ranked higher in SERPs . All the best.
 
1. Start with Keyword Research and create a semantic of keywords you will target.
2. Your content should sell. Use Call to Action and specific offers to convert organic traffic into sell.
3. Don't listen to marketing sellers.

  • Content sellers will say you that content matters and will try to sell you 40 time rewritten articles about the same shit... and their argument will be... "look 90 % uniqueness by Copyscape". (that definitely don't make content "great")
  • Link Builders will use some vague concepts like link diversification, hand-made, and so on. That actually don't mean nothing. Usually will sell some bullshit backlinks that are not even indexed and will be dead in 2 months.
  • Social Signals - sellers will try to convince you to buy social shares and likes, and will argue that this is a rank factor...

On-Page, Content, Backlinks - for sure are important factors. But matters how good, relevant they was created.

Nobody here doesn't know anything about your business, niche, or site. So we are giving you some sample advice. Like use Long Tail Keyword... but if in your niche there are any low competitive commercial keywords. You definitely should take the advantage and focus on them first. On the other hand, there are cases when, promoting a long tail keyword may cost you more than this keyword will ever bring you money.

4. Implementation Matters. Constantly perform your routine. There is no easy money there right now.
 
1. Keyword Research - find some low competitive keywords, those are easy to rank. You may even go with lowest volume in the beginning. They do pretty well for a new site since the competition is very low.
2. Publish Quality Posts - Content is the still the king and make sure the content adds value to the user. Be consistent in publishing. It helps a lot!
3. Optimisation & Links - Make sure to do onpage seo for your articles. Keep improving older articles, it helps a lot in ranking. Once few keywords start to comeup, start building links. Go slow and gradually increase the link building.
 
We all do keywords, long-tail phrases and SEO which are visible for anyone to copy, so we must do something that makes us stand out, something that makes us different from others and the only thing is uniquely excellent and informative content.

For example, if someone is going to compete against the big names in SEO who also have excellent SEO and keyword phrases, what are they going to offer that is different and competes against those such as Neil Patel, Ahrefs or SEMrush? If it’s just re-cycled information based on what has already said it’s not original content.

In other words, those who have nothing of value to offer end up struggling and wondering why they’re not ranking. If I visit a site I expect to come away having learned something that I didn’t previously know. It doesn’t mean I have to agree with what’s said, but it has to be different from what’s already been said. If that doesn’t happen I don’t go back and neither does anyone else.

I write about education, social and political science, travel … They’re not original topics, but they’re things I know about and I can put my own slant on them which then makes them unique, interesting and hopefully informative. If I didn’t know about those topics do you think I’d get any interest by getting someone else to write (mass produce) them for $10, or from buying (awesome) useless backlinks to pretend they’re popular?

In a world of SEO sameness and just like any other business, branding, content and distribution is the key. If someone can’t write a 500 word article that will blow people away with information, they shouldn’t even think about making money.
