H Simon, thank you for your question. I'll try to answer them according to my experience and hopefully it helps you out. I am going to give out definitions for both of them, it'll help you make out the difference.
Guest Post
As you can see, the word itself gives you an idea of what a "
guest post" is. A guest post is when you as a guest post an article on someones website, yet you do not own the website nor work for it.
The main purpose
The main question that arises on your mind is probably, "what is even guest post useful for?" Well, to say the truth this method has been going since a long-long time and to this day it still works.
Basically the main purpose of a guest post is to either drive traffic to your website and gain more exposure OR boost your backlink profile in order to gain more authority over other sites in Google. Nowadays, guest posting isn't free and many people are charging tremendous amount for a simple guest-post and this is only because guest posting on a site does indeed give you a good boost, plus it's 2020 so things have changed a lot.
The web-master / administrator of the blog you are trying to guest post to will give you various options to embed your link in and some of them are:
- Naked anchor link (https://examplefor2020meerakat.com)
- Branded keyword (Visit Meerakat [my brand])
- Partial match keyword (If my main keyword is: burger is healthy in 2020 then my partial match keyword would be health benefits of burger)
- Generic keyword (Read more, click me to read more, etc...)
As mentioned above in my reply, choosing a good site to guest post is very important since you DO NOT want to guest post in a site which is full of unreadable articles, full of spam comments, and lots of other factors that might affect your money site negatively.
Niche Edit
Niche edit is also a very simple concept which is why I won't go deep into this but I will explain few things which might help you grasp the main motivation behind niche edits.
A niche edit is basically when you insert a link in an article that is already indexed of a specific website of-course. Niche edit just like guest posts helps you use relevant anchors, but of-course your anchor needs to redirect to a site that is relevant to the article that you used your anchor in. The main reason why it has the word "niche" is because it has to be relevant to your niche and not some any random website.
Let's say I own a website and my article is of 2015. You contact me through my contact form saying something like:
"Hey Meerakat, I believe some information in your article is outdated if required I can provide up-to date information and link a relevant article to my blog" (please do not use this while contacting web-masters as this is just an example!)
I may decide to charge you since I will figure out what's your main motive or just let you add relevant information and link your site in my article. Your site needs to be relevant (I am stressing on this word a lot) and needs to look like an absolutely quality website with readable articles, good looking theme, and lots of other factors which are involved in impressing the site owner you are trying to contact for either guest posting or niche edit.
It has the same purpose as a guest post, it helps you build more authority over sites and helps you gain more exposure.
