I lost 60% of traffic and every single keyword that I ranked on #1 or featured snippet is replaced by other websites. Huge authority brands have big advantage, it seems impossible to fight against them. You get a chance to rank few months here and there, but holding the top position is very hard, if keyword start to get more search queries G will drop you and replace with youtube video or authority domain no doubt about that.
Guys, are you seriously not figuring out what google is trying to tell you?
Look at the people crying here...most of the people who lost traffic had legit websites, complete whitehat sites following their "guidelines" and still got rekt. I am also one of them, but i also get the message.
Google does not need your pure legit white hat website. Google needs viagra parasites, fake offer scams, fake hack websites, content generator sites. Those are the sites that rank now. Read the guidelines from A to Z and broke every single rule if you want to rank.
I've put a lot of time and effort + money to build my white hat website. I've done tons of research, countless sleepless nights. I've had to cut time from my family, friends & girlfriend so i can build my business...and suddenly some moron with click of a button destroyed everything. And it's not my site only. Probably thousands of sites are destroyed and guess what, not even 10% will come back.
So I simply decides that im not going to be a loser here because of someone else fault. If the site wont get back in 2 weeks period (every single keyword) I will do the most brutal scams online and i will have 0 guilty feelings. You know why? If someone can fuck my life for no reason, why should i not fuck with other lives...same for no reason. Also there are good money in scams and it seems google love those sites.
So, it's a win win situation for me however you turn the dice.

It's like you're reading my mind. I've spent hundreds of hours working on my white hat site even though I've made much more money with blackhat sites. I started working on my whitehat site because I wanted something that would have longevity. Google has clearly shown that they do not care. I'm already working on going back to complete blackhat. It's been working for years and it doesn't seem like Google is getting any better at stopping it at all.
At least when I get penalized when I'm working on Blackhat sites I feel like it's justified and I can start over and not much time is wasted. When you get penalized for unknown reasons on a site that's legitimate and that you put your heart and soul in it's so demotivating.
$3 million for a whole business plan, but this change broke our plan.

When you've gotten that sweet, "free" organic traffic for a few months it's time to shuffle the SERPs so you start buying their PPC ads.
I think it has absolutely nothing to do with how whitehat/blackhat your site is, how awesome backlinks you have, the loading time or anything else. It's all about randomly shuffling us around, I'm calling it.
One thing is sure though, you can't rely on one website if you're in SEO.

HOLY SHIT THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME there's this e-commerce site that I outranked a few months back but they are now sitting number one. The site has a pretty strong link profile but overall the site is garbage (as well as their online reviews). I wrote 1000+ word well-researched content and they simply mentioned the keyword and outranked me now

It's because you've lost long tail/related keywords. I see exactly the same, in fact, for me, it started with the Jan 9th, 2020 silent update, between Feb and May I did got my traffic back twice, each time for about 2 weeks and then right back where I was before, it's like they were turning this thing ON and OFF or testing it.
My best guess is that's some kind of new site-wide algo penalty targeting over-optimization, on-page SEO, links or anchor text, or a combination of all. I haven't figured it out yet but since my site was doing very well and have not built any new links for almost 2 years I suspect it's either anchor text (from my old links) or on-page SEO or both.
On the positive, since whatever it is, now it's a part of core algo so it should be easier to recover because you don't have to wait for a separate algo to refresh. Personally I'd rather deal with rank loss instead of this crazy shit where your rank seems unchanged and all you see is traffic loss.
Is your anchor text exact, partial much, or generic?
