Starting a New Site: How Much Content?

Hi everyone.

So after trawling BHW for a few days, I'm going to start my own site with a view slipping in some affiliate action where possible. But I'm playing it mostly straight; I'm picking a niche I'm genuinely interested, I intend to write quality posts with real value to the reader, etc.

That being said, I do want this site to become an income source, and that means people visiting the site. So what I wanted to ask it; how much content should I have on there before I start looking into things like link building services and guest posting etc? I'm assuming there's no point in spending money to drive people to a site with 2 posts.

I would say to aim atleast 100k words but before that, do some kickass keyword research because if you target low competitive keywords, it will help you rank faster.

it depen what keyword you want to rank or target.
you need to do research on those. if your competitor have 50k word, than you need to make more with better quality. or at leas the same with better quality

Increase the number of articles by selecting long-tail, less competitive keywords. And then it is better to complete your on-page optimization properly before building the backlinks.

50k then focus on links and get it making some money. then another 50k. repeat till 350-500k. then build another

Like everyone has already said

Just write quality posts. As a suggestion. Instead of focusing on number of words

-> be Consistent with putting content. I usually do 12 posts every month for 6-8 months. Assuming each post is 2000 words long. After 6-8 months, you already have a lot of content pushed on the site and based on the KWs you chose, you should see results

Have a keyword research, look at your competitor, make sure you have a high quality content than just stuffing words, engage actively with your site, make it interactive, user friendly, more importantly be consistent with your content. Good luck.

Depends on the keyword and competition. Post only quality and valuable content. Keep posting consistently to retain user interest and to get new users. 50k words will do good and start building backlinks with pace.

The more content you write the faster your articles rank and the sooner you get organic traffic
Stay away from backlinks, especially from those who are selling "whitehat backlinks"
Once your site is ranking for some low comp kw's the backlinks will come organically and you can start targeting higher comp kw's

Thanks, everyone, loads of helpful advice here. So, few different opinions but the consensus seems to be stick to low comp keywords, write good content, and have around 50k of it before expecting anything to happen.

@pepeneo's post has me hopeful. I realise I might be leaving money on the table by not making use of the full range of methods BHW shows, but if I could make this work to a reasonable degree by just writing the content and sharing a few links, that would suit me fine.

How competitive are your target keywords?

Depending on the answers you supply to the questions above, your plan should be:

a) post 'question and answer' type content OR
b) longer list posts OR
c) super long and info-heavy AUTHORITY posts

Target 1 lakh words and break posts in 2k word each that should help

First, analyze keyword analysis and give the quality of unique quality of new trend content and improve the internal linking structure and slowly improve the back-links.

Clickbait posts + quality content + medium difficulty keywords (30 to 50 by Moz) = $$$$$$$
Also i would go from 20k+ words, backlinks need time anyway so you can easily go for 50k+ words while backlinks have an effect upon your website

Just also depends on the kind of content you're going after. If its some top-notch researches, it might be less, but if it's of lesser quality, the more, the better,

Go the 10beasts way and put out a few quality posts (the site had about 8 posts and was bringing in thousands of dollars every month in just a couple of months).

Thanks for the advice. If I take the 1 HQ post a week route, is there any reason to not also throw up some smaller content (500-1000 word sort of stuff). I don't intend to publish anything on this site that isn't high quality, but also if it's not going to be any benefit I won't bother.
