Starting a New Site: How Much Content?

20 articles to start with, then about 15 articles per month will be decent to get good rankings.

Thanks for the advice. If I take the 1 HQ post a week route, is there any reason to not also throw up some smaller content (500-1000 word sort of stuff). I don't intend to publish anything on this site that isn't high quality, but also if it's not going to be any benefit I won't bother.
There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't. The length of content depends on various things, such as the niche you are in. To rank in some niches (think automotive reviews), you'd need no less than 2k words to have a decent chance of ranking.
In others, though, you need much much less.

Just do proper keyword research and check the serps to see who's ranking for it. Then, write better content even if that "better" content means writing an article with a couple hundred words.

One of my clients said there was a recent Google update and he needs even MORE content

He's been ordering 4,000 word pages and such, has been showing a lot of promise - recent update threw a wrench in things but nothing more content can't fix!

The amount of content you will need will depend on your niche, so I recommend that you check out the competition first. The more content they have, the more you’ll need to write before driving traffic to your site becomes worthwhile.
One more thing to keep in mind is that quality will always trump quantity. If your content has information that your competitors’ content doesn’t, you’ll have a major advantage over them. Just remember to keep it sincere and not stuff it with keywords.
As a rule of thumb, though, 50–100k words should be reasonable enough to get you going. If it’s a hyper-specialized niche, you may not even need that much. If you’re aiming for the big leagues, though, those numbers can inflate fast.

Hi everyone.

So after trawling BHW for a few days, I'm going to start my own site with a view slipping in some affiliate action where possible. But I'm playing it mostly straight; I'm picking a niche I'm genuinely interested, I intend to write quality posts with real value to the reader, etc.

That being said, I do want this site to become an income source, and that means people visiting the site. So what I wanted to ask it; how much content should I have on there before I start looking into things like link building services and guest posting etc? I'm assuming there's no point in spending money to drive people to a site with 2 posts.

Thanks for in advance for any advice.

Site with 50k -100 k content is good. Dont compromise with quality.
