So i am searching some domains and i came up with good (only because they sounds good, im here to understand how to determine if they might be worth using) brandable names which are avaialble, my question is:

Will it be completely worthless if its not .COM? meaning, it will always be better to have a longer, less brandable name, than a short one which is not .COM?

All other .shop, club etc, and ones that have perfect phrase match like Proper.Health, you get my point, SEO worthless? or will be weighted as any new domain i would use from scratch in that case, including a .com

Or in all or most cases it will all come down to my content strategy and link building, with the domain having a minor impact on the long term (as long as its not spammed)

I am trying to figure out whether going without the perfect domain in the first place can make me face a dead end, and that no matter i will try, it will not rank.

Also what free tools can i use to do a quick check on these domains for their metrics?

For domain selection you need to be creative...
Think.. think .. think... some words which make a creative domain which is unique and which represent your business idea

You can try ubersuggest it's very good for a free tools

No.domain name can give you some edge. But there is no domain that is useless in seo, except the domain is banned by google.

Yes In most cases i will come down to content and link building, and domain will give some edge.

I was under the impression that the new gtlds can rank just as well as .com could, but for all I know that could be inaccurate. Someone like @Nargil would probably give a good answer to this.

Thanks for your answeres friends.

So a domain will give me an edge, but none is useless unless it was spammed before.

i still don't figure out what is BETTER tho, to use a long .com, which ideally is a phrase match to one of my money keywords, or a short brandable name, which will not rule out word of mouth, and will be easy to remember.

I understand it might help me rank for the keyword which is inside the domain name, but i do have many other keywords, which are not variations of that same keyword, but completely different.

So i cant conclude which benefit i should go after, my guts tell me that a short brand name is stronger, but i am noob in SEO, and maybe a keywroded domain will make my efforts that much easier.

I bought one expired domain a month back and finished my site. Later came to know that, the site is banned by google. I believe thats the only thing you need to consider.
What I learned from here is if not .com , then .net and .org

I bought one new domain today by taking help from ubersuggest - searched the KW and made one using a combination of suggested ones.

Haha, i wish the mighty Nargil will come to my little thread. "Say hello to my little thread!" - Tony Montana

If you don't have any choice in .com, you can always look another option. As long as you have a good SEO strategy, people will come to your site.

That's good to know :)

Go with .com if you are targeting worldwide otherwise go with country specific if wish to target to a particular country

regarding the keyword in the domain name, kindly do not go with it

Seo-wise they're mostly the same. I personally prefer .coms because I think that's what everyone is used to, but you can always try with an exotic extension, you won't have much problems ranking it if you do proper seo.

TLD doesn't matter. SEO wise, they are all treated the same. Reasons why you don't see them ranking as often, is because people don't use them as often. There are some brandability and trust disadvantages sometimes, especially in evergreen non internet niches.

As in, when you are buying bed as a 50 year old, you don't want bestbed.bedbed domain to buy from, etc.

So if you are starting fresh, it really doesn't matter, but ideally, stick with .com. For future brandability and everything. Depending on your niche, if you come up with something really catchy with one of those fancy new TLDs, then by all means, go for it.

Regarding EMD/PMD -> Avoid completely. Most have been spammed or abused in the past, advantaged of having this kind of domains are very close to zero nowadays and you are more likely to overoptimize yourself. I too like to live in the past sometimes, but let's move on from 2012 please.

Your idealy thing to do is to get a nice, massive, behemoth of a domain, pick your new niche based on it and you are sorted. You will save a lot of money on backlinks and will also, to some extent, rank faster.

Second best choice is just getting a brandable, never used, .com domain.

So if I'm launching a site to sell beds, using your example, you believe that the only real advantage of having "beds.com" over having "michaelsbeds.com" is brandability and authority within the eyes of consumers, but not so much from the point of Big G any more?

Thank your very much for the detailed answer!

When i go for non .com - i always try to make it super catchy so the domain extension is always a part of the phrase, example: Espresso.Club (not mine)

Unfortunately, i don't know what you mean be a behemoth domain, do you mean metrics wise? age and so?

Age of domain, as in when it was registered for the first time, is irrelevant. Absolutely no impact on SEO. Whoever claims otherwise, should consider a career in gastronomy (fast foods ideally).

And yes, that's what I meant. Link profile wise.

If those domains are both fresh and don't have any existing backlink profiles, then yes.

You're awesome bro, i had alot of AHA moments now. Thanks.

TLD doesn't mean anything, though it could be important. Like, for me I got dolob.icu and it's cool because that's my username! :)
