I have good reason to believe that my competitor may be trying to negative SEO me. I know i need to monitor my backlinks, but can't sites block crawlers from tools like Ahrefs and Moz? Or will these tools pick up any potential negative SEO links?

If you were under a negative SEO attack, then you would be spammed with thousands of links. In order to block those, the spammer would have to be owner of the properties those backlinks are on, so no, they are definitely not hidden.

Unless he is of course using some penalized PBN sites or something, but you would see those in Google search console anyway. Just as 301 redirects from penalized domains.

Thanks for the insight. To be a little more specific my question was do spammy PBN's exist for the sole purpose of negative SEO and they all block crawlers like Moz and Ahrefs so the victim can't detect the attack? Maybe i'm getting a little too paranoid at this point but me and my competitor are mortal enemies

Doubt anyone would ever bother with that. Then again, someone could just order shittons crappy PBNs from marketplace, but that's a really pathetic way of doing negative SEO.

Have your rankings tanked, and can you see all spammy links in your gsc if yes then you have a issue but google normally doesn’t consider them so don’t worry

If your ranking suddenly dip and you find new spammy Link, or a 301 site that was banned by Google.

If they block crawlers then you're somewhat screwed, but you'll see everything through search console, so stick with that for monitoring it. If you see random spammy PBNs coming in then use third party options to find the most links you can to disavow before they start taking affect.

thanks, thats what i figured. is there any way within GSC to see links by date? like to see the new links that come in? or do they only show all links?
