I landed a job at a top-three software company because of exactly this. Because I was so outgoing and genuine with the people I was volunteering to help. A high ranking member of the company walked up to me and said "I love how honest and caring you are, would you like a job at ______?"

Mine was a global oil company. There is a huge amount of politics and back stabbing in global leadership, I was the opposite and rose up through the ranks very quickly. The top boys wanted someone they could trust.

I use to help friends and family A LOT, very few ever returned the favour in helping me out if I needed it.
So now, I don’t have a problem telling people my issue. If you don’t keep it “100” I don’t need you in my life.
I keep my business to myself, and as far as friends are concerned - Most of my good friends have a strong head on their shoulders and I don’t really let money, business get in between us as it always ends ugly. Embrace your friends as people, not what they can give you. Otherwise you are basically a worthless gold digger.

Agreed, not only do you learn things for yourself by helping others, but you may also learn something from them. You can always learn something from someone, even a "loser".
Great discussion though and respect for sharing your opinion sincerely. I can empathise to some extent as if you are spending too much time helping others you risk harming your own life and the person you are helping may even think less of you as if you don't respect your own time. There's a balance to everything in life.
Yeah maybe OP got burned one too many times or something. I sometimes feel the way he does. But then I realize, hey, a loser just taught me something. And I go on with my day.

I think we should help people, your mindset is toxic OP. Sometimes, helping people give us happiness. I don't tell you to go fucking around and give people bread and money, just some little thing such as walking a child across the street, answer some simple questions ... remember that what you give will be back one day. To me, you are a loser.

It feels better to be good. Sometimes it's a balancing act to do good or bad. If you can make alot of money and be good, it's better for everyone. Sometimes things seem ok, but you have a feeling deep down that it's not good to do.
