Im a top rated developer on Upwork and things are very very slow, I cant find any high paying clients (third world country account) and clients abndon and the damn job posting without hiring anyone, I keep losing connects it really sucks after $3k+ earned and about 9 projects with five stars I cant generate leads with it. Do you have an advice?

It's both. In some projects, I have to call and find out contact details of the decision makers. I'm not good with calls at all, so I take help of a friend who has good international calling experience.
 
sounds interesting. I had started off with such freelancer sites and earned a decent amount of money. Shoot me a dm if you are interested in JV. I am good at web development and programming (PHP, Node.js, python)
 
Earning Update: 3rd March 2020

New lead gen project for $500
This one was the quickest job I got on Upwork. I saw the job 16 minutes after it was posted, submitted my proposal, and the client just hired me after an hour WITHOUT asking any questions. Usually it takes at least 3 to 10 messages back and forth, over 2-3 days before I get hired. It's the first time I got something on Upwork this fast haha. I hope there are more such clients :)

@stepdub did you get an email from Upwork today about them charging a fee if you want to take a conversation with a client elsewhere outside of Upwork?

Do you ever grab a skype or email from a client and pursue work outside of Upwork? Seems like people have been banned so I haven't tried it yet

I never ask clients for their skype. If they give out their skype, then I contact them. Very recently a client who shared his skype with me got banned after a week - I have no idea how Upwork found that out, this client had a spend history of $100,000+ and a 6 year old account. He made an appeal, but didn't get his account back. So I recommend not to take the conversation outside of Upwork.

Make your profile beautiful, get some fake reviews, then start bidding. All the best.

Supposedly they monitor chats or get alerts with words like 'Skype'.

It was this email:

"We are making it easier for our customers to take relationships formed on Upwork off of our platform without violating our Terms of Service with a simplified Conversion Fee. We recognize that there are situations where we facilitate very successful client and freelancer matches and, for a variety of reasons, both parties would like to continue working together outside of Upwork. While we continue to enhance our offering to ensure clients and freelancers have everything they need to work together on Upwork, we don't want to prevent our customers from working together in ways that better meet their business needs. To support these needs, we are updating our Terms of Service with a more straightforward Conversion Fee that allows users to take Upwork relationships off-platform without violating our Terms of Service. We will also be rolling out further product enhancements to support this process over the coming months."

I was hesitant to ask long-term clients for their Skype or email just to continue working with them off the site, just to avoid Upwork ridiculous fees. But now that they are starting this ^^ I'll just pay the fee

Its actually very common that people use Skype, discord, slack and never type a word in upwork chat.. dont worry, i know tons of clients doing this and upwork doesn't care as long as ure making payments through the platform

I just mentioned how my client got banned for sharing his skype id in messages.

I've heard of people getting banned just for asking. that's why I was asking whether it's worth the risk, now that Upwork will charge a fee to take the conversation elsewhere (I hate Upwork so f*cking much) it's possible to do it without getting kicked off. not worth trying otherwise I guess
