"retention is king" = bullshit

Same niche of other videos, this one has great retention, look at the average 24% up. Yet, I get shitty views, in fact, its not even recommended anymore = dead video. Im feeding it views from my most ranked videos so it doesn't look bad on my channel, but basically once a video does not get suggested by the algorithm its fucking over.

Only reason I can think of is that for some reason this has 3.5% CTR and others tend to have 6% ish... so apparently a small difference in CTR obliterates your video.

It also causes me to lose subs for some reason. I guess my channel is too big (1+ million subs) and if I don't get enough views the number of people unsubbing is higher than subbing.

I put so much effort on this stuff for nothing. It's too much of a crapshot. Bad luck in your CTR% can wreck your video apparently. And having subs is useless unless you are a big personality, im anonymous, I make animations. Not worth it, too much time, and its a crapshot, its so random when a video ranks. Meanwhile some zoomer idiot makes videos daily playing some game and gets tons of views per video. Fuck this.

I understand your frustrations brother. The Youtube algorithm is not something people can just solve and get 100% success rate.
Just keep in mind that most of the channel owners here would die for 80K+ videos, so it's good to try and keep things in perspective.

Why to look at it from such a negative perspective?
Perhaps you've learned that CTR is more important than retention. Why not improving your thumbnail/title?
And if that's not possible for the current video, you can apply the lessons with your next videos.

My thumbnail is pretty damn good, certainly better than other ranked videos with lame thumbnails. Title is the standard for the niche.

The way I see it is it is a "look of the draw" situation. You get a window of opportunity you upload a video where it gets impressions, then you have to meet a treshold of CTR, if its not meet, then it's over. Not even higher retention makes up for it.

This assuming that there isn't any behind-the-curtains algorithm throttle shenanigans happening triggered by whatever the fuck could trigger that.

The only reason a channel grows is because of suggested traffic. Without suggested traffic is basically game over, you are stuck. People don't search for shit anymore, they just click on suggested videos. Search results only matter for certain niches where you would have high CPM and be able to somehow convert outside of adsense as well. But the real numbers are made from suggested traffic.

I 100% agree I have a video with shit avd that’s not even 10 minutes but a video that’s 10 minutes with 5:45 AVD and it does way worse then the other video and both videos ctr is around 10-%

Yeah, youtube is weird. I have videos with 500k views and 5% CTR and videos with 18% CTR and 30k views.. Lately I try uploading at a time when views are starting to grow, like around 3PM in hopes to get a decent number of views in the first hours of upload, maybe that will help.

Update on how the video is doing:

As you can see, I continue lossing subs each day from this video. Luckily the rest of the videos gain me subs, but not this one. I've had this happen a couple of times before but eventually it went positive and started gaining subs, but this is stuck in lossing me 250 ish subs per day which is fucking annoying.

Also notice the video is basically dead. All traffic comes from end screen of ranked videos.

Also notice the jump in CTR to 5% did fucking nothing. "Average view duration" continues being better than average.

Seriously, fuck this. What the fuck, it makes no sense. This is all luck. Every video I upload I become paranoid that my channel became broken. I don't want to become of these channels that start losing subs when their best ranked videos get deranked. This is insanity.

Ive now had 5.5 on this video, same shit. I spotted a tiny amount of suggested traffic the other day, now not even that, it doesnt show up again on realtime anymore as u can see, so basically dead.

In order to make money in youtube YOU HAVE TO GET SUGGESTED TRAFFIC, it's how you get fresh traffic, and how your channel grows.

I say if u can take a monthly budget just something small from your youtube earnings and invest it back to youtube ads. Basically u choose some of your good videos and u put them in youtube suggested ads and target your competitors that can be good but it will only work if the content you provide is equal or better than your competitors and yes u should keep pushing content u can't stop .. since if u stop everything dies.

Anyway, YouTube algorithm has changed. The watch time thing is it because it used to be a major factor now, also from my experience, it is not anymore.
Hard to understand why YouTube changed this as it is the best metric that showcase how much a video was appreciated..I'd say now on YouTube is a lot about luck and random.
Titles and keywords can help get views, even more than a thumbnail
