"retention is king" = bullshit

Wait and see. It's the same for me. It can take weeks before it gets recommended.

You reached 1kk subscribers only because YouTube recommended you. With your tight head that only wants money but can't analyze - life will be difficult.

You only found out a month ago that you have a channel analyst?
Never thought about why some videos get more than others? Although it may be very similar videos.
Show me your thumbnail, I'm sure it's crap. Make a thumbnail that isn't on the channel, so that we understand your level.

Take out your children's diary and write it down. YouTube doesn't give a fuck about your retention if your ctr is below the floor. Even if it will be 120%
If you have subscribers in minus on this video, you can forget about the views.
1. ctr 2. retention + subs.

I have a bunch of examples where the retention is 10%, and the video is 10+ minutes long. Due to the high ctr, it brings me money for years and has almost 14kk views.

*My English is as bad as your ability to think.

Your CTR is what's killing it.

2 most important metrics =CTR and watchtime.

I dont understand why youre losing so many subs though unless you posted such a controversial video to your subs; then that's on you though. But even so, I dont give a shit about subs when it comes to posting on my channels.

Again 2 most important metrics= CTR and retention rate= views.

I was convinced Youtube Was fucked when I saw a guy whos in the same niche as me post shitty thumbnails , use no tags and pass me significantly in subscribers and views when I had the better content and channel in less that 2 months. He went from 50k subs to 200k subs and im now reaching 100k subs after grinding for 8 years, its ridiculous but I keep on striving.

Getting recommended is the only way to grow an entertainment channel, I haven't seen evidence of the contrary. People don't search for shit, they click on the recommended tab. People only search for very concrete stuff, and living off search volume has to be due very niche high CPM stuff anyway, the amount of traffic coming from there is negligible for entertainment CPM, so you need to be recommended.

No, I haven't found about analytics now. CTR and retention has been the only thing that makes some sort of sense in the clusterfuck known as YT algorithm thus far as far as I can tell.

About subscribers, you haven't considered this angle:

There's no way to know exactly how many subs you are losing and how many you are gaining in YT anymore because they have hidden this. What you get is a net result of subs gained/subs lost.

For example, on a given day, you gain 100 subs, but lose -200 subs. What YT will say is that you lost 100 subs. So you will see a "-100" on the chart.

Here's how it used to be (not my channel):

maxresdefault.jpg

As you see, it used to be segmented in "Subscribers Gained" and "Subscribers Lost"

Why is this important? because I can't know if the subs being lost is around the normal amount of subs being lost in the rest of the videos, or if it's anormal.

Once you have a big channel of 1+million, you lose subs always, it doesn't matter what you do, there's always a % of subs lost. What happens if a video gets abnormal views? that the subs lost stand out more, because there isn't enough influx of views to make it positive.

So seeing subs gained and lost was crucial to see what the fuck is actually happening, for some reason YT is no longer showing this.

Now, update on how the video is doing:

video-26-04-2020.png

As you can see, it's doing shit. CTR went up, it's now to accetable rate, at least, given past experience of other videos that do get recommended, which is around past 5 or 6%. But still, I see losing subs, basically as a subset of the views going down. Again, hard to tell since no subs gained/subs chart metrics anymore.

It's now recommended at 1.6% traffic... irrelevant. Sometimes I see the algorithm recommends it a tiny bit, then it disappears, it comes back and so on, but 87% of the traffic comes from my viral video, which btw, it's also falling in views, which shows on the views of the above chart also going down as well as subs (less views = less subs gained). Probably traffic coming from your own videos doesn't help much getting recommended, it has to come from the algorithm recommending it, which again, its why I think getting recommended is king.

And now, let's look at the viral video I mentioned, my best performing video, or at least this was the case until a couple of days ago before views also went down couple with an increase of CTR:

viral-down.png

As you can see, this video was picked up by the algorithm around November 10th 2019 with that big peak, then stabilized at a nice 100k views per day average. The CTR stabilized at around 6% average. Retention has been more or less stable. On February 23, I had a lower retention and CTR than now, but views didn't go into a downtrend. What's confusing is, my CTR is skyrocketing again at near all time highs, but my views are going down. With increased CTR and the same retention or higher than February, my views have been cut in half. So what the flying fuck is going on?

Because of things like this, you start becoming paranoid about everything:

1) Youtube has invisibly flagged my channel/video because of X bullshit impossible to know reason
2) Some dude stole my thumbnail, I realized this a couple hours ago, has been running a live feed with stolen videos (not my videos, but with my thumbnail) and this may screw up with the algorithm? then again, my CTR is not affected negatively, in fact it's up. I saw this because this live feed with my thumbnail was recommended to me.. should I copyright strike this? Im worried that I copyright strike it and by the time YT staff looks at it, this person has already changed the thumbnail so technically I would be claiming a thumbnail that is not mine, and now with the covid19 thing the staff is slow
3) Something else im missing

Im trying to make sense out of this. My content and thumbnails are good by niche standards. There's no real logical reason to believe my content is at fault. I see really shit content in my niche, half assed, without barely any SEO, getting recommended and getting tons of views, as well as other higher quality stuff. I see other people not ranking their videos anymore, they quickly get stuck, even with tons of subs, while others thrive, and others struggle. No real correlation in content and results, except in a few cases were their stuff is good and deserves the views. In others you see really crappy stuff consistently getting +1 million views per video while others channels can't even get 100k or struggle to get there. So you start thinking if Youtube has a basket of channels marked as "trusted" and they get tons of impressions and I may have been there, but because of a video, or something they don't like, you are permanently out of said basket.

I see specially cheap shit like people uploading 4 minutes of actual new animation, then reupload the same videos they uploaded before to make it a 15 minute video. I've considered doing this because in animation its hard to upload often (I cant barely upload once a month if I want original content) but I just cant keep up with those other people doing this. But im paranoid in the long term this is going to get them shadowbanned/striked/content removed or demonetized for "repetitive content" worst case scenario. You never know so im avoiding doing that. Im trying to stay within the 100% whitehat channels. But its just very frustrating when you see how your video depends on the couple of ranked videos that get recommended while the rest of videos don't pick up. You already know if the video doesn't get recommended it's over. And when you see channels with 1 million subs that can't even hit 40k views sometimes after working in animation you start thinking if this is sustainable... im working on a new video, if it doesn't perform decently I may start considering that this is not worth it because my conclusion is that this shit is "luck of the draw" + things happening behind the curtain (these things are confirmed with this:

)

So you never know if you are working while crippled or not. Im going to keep making videos because it's making me money, but if I don't see growth, it's not motivating in the long run. I will keep working for the rest of the year and see what happens. The community i've grown isn't really a community... it's like getting subscribers when you make compilations or something generic. Its just people randomly subbing.. they dont give a shit about you. Userbase on YT is mostly kids that give a shit, they go from video to video. Only cult personalities and more mature niches can really grow userbases that can have closs platform reach. In my niche this is not the case so you depend on AdSense basically, and once YT randomly (as it seems) stops recommending your stuff you are fucked. Like I said im going to continue, I've had bad performing videos before, had some critical moments were I thought it was all over and magically managed to rank a video and give me more months of passive traffic, but its scary seeing other channels stuck in a limbo for ages.

Well, look at my post above. Why is my video lossing traffic when CTR is going up with a sustained retention rate?

Retention can be manipulated easily . What can't be manipulated is type of people viewing your videos. If people from random interested watch your video it will never get traffic or recommended. IfIf Peop viewing your video has similar interests then video will be recommended to more people with similar interests.

bruh stop complaining. retention and ctr yes king and they are important.

no matter how good ur retnetion dont expect to get ur video recommended all the time. the algo is very random now. u have to keep uploading, one of ur videos or some of it will blow up. dont expect everyhting too. thats how youtube works.
i have experience in the same. i think yt has intentionally randomized the algo so everyone wont understand how it works or maybe to prevent abuse.
\
just dont expect some magic when ur channel is new and to be blessed with 1M views lmao.
work hard and work ur way up.

and to correct u again. yes rentention is king. just remember that the algo is randomized. thats what u r experiencing here

@Tribulations did you checked your videos p-score as suggested here? https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xyxDZIGztWDqGQGae4Oakkt0VAYB21-OcXgNKYrPzcw/edit
did you had different ratings and p-score on that video (comparing to some older successful views on your channel)?

i think that there is a random factor that some good videos gets to fly and some other good videos will stay on the ground, maybe it's only the YouTube's AI algo or maybe there are human moderators that decide per video...
did you ever considered to do a "re-work" on that video, for example to "update it" by delete the original, change something on the intro and spin it (with video spin blaster) so it will be considered as a fresh unique content that you can re-upload.

Unfortunately, they patched it so you cant look at your p-score anymore, by the time I learned about that it was already patched.

Im not sure what I would change anyway, and also if I take the video down, my channel will have -400k views all of a sudden, and im worried this can be negative (when you hide or delete a video you lose the sum of its views on the channel)

Please look at the data I posted again. I gave you 2 instances of this not being true:

My retention on the video that is doing poorly has the best retention ever on my channel. Sure the CTR was a bit shit at the start but now it's picking up to 6%, which is were videos do at least decent. If retention was king, then the algorithm would already be picking it up, it doesn't.

Then there's my viral video going down in views with the same retention I had and with a way higher CTR, almost as high as when it went viral, yet im losing views. Compare the current vews to the February 23 date I selected when I had lower retention and lower views yet I had a peak of 130k views there. So what the fuck is this about then?

Also my channel is old, and has 1+ million subs. So im assuming it has some authority. Then again, there are similar channels in the niche with same statistics and they become stagnant, their videos no longer get recommended and are stuck. My fear is to become one of these channels.

It's easy to say "dont complain bro just keep upload" when you do half assed mass produced shit, but im in the animation niche, it takes too long to create a video and come up with ideas even then have this shitty algorithm shit on it assuming they aren't manually picking who gets views and who doesn't based on some random internal policy.

uh! sorry but i looked up on your channel and looks like its been like 10 months since you last uploaded your video.. and let me tell you one thing .. i don't know that's your channel or not.. but youtube is not easy as it was 3 or 6 years ago.. now just having CTR or high retention won't take you for a long ride and will give you views for life.. you need to focus on constant content creation.. and also the fact that you keep on talkin about two three things .. but in reality there are like more than 10 things (Likes on the video, social viral, competitor video, how frequently you making more videos, subscriber views) works to make a video get into suggestion and keep it stay there and feed you views... you need to take a deep breath.. and make few more videos.. and don't stress on analytics for few weeks .. and put bit more work on your content and look for competitor and try to see what they doing and do your research work there.. and again like everyone else saying retention still a king .. but there is a "IF".. and that is if you going for search or boosting your video for suggestion views.. retention views will put you there and then CTR will work to keep the views flowing and then the other metrics will work to keep the views coming.. with the amount of videos uploading every minute on youtube.. you can't first thing depend on one video and second thing just can't stretch few videos too far .. again you have to constantly make videos and keep them stretching on these metrics to make them all work together to get the viewer coming to you...

3.5% CTR and others tend to have 6% ish... so apparently a small difference in CTR obliterates your video.
Thats not a small difference. Thats almost 2 times more. I had videos recommended with low average duration (1:20) but with high ctr (15%)

well done bro couldnt have said that better. the op needs to understand that. u need to do constant work.

also some people expect to get continouos traffic for life like passive which will never happen anymore. only with certain methods.

u need to work work, plus its randomized, but retention and CTR is still a king

thats why i said it is randomized but even then the high retention videos once they blow up usually based on experience performs better. sometimes even i have some videos that dont have that much high retention but still performs good but again randomized.

As you can see on the pics I posted, my retention is 40%+ for 15+ minute videos, so it's pretty good. The video that has now reached 6% CTR is 17 minutes long and has an average of 9:30 watchtime, that is above average of all my channel by a good margin, still useless.

What im seeing is that some channels consistently rank like shit and are stuck in a limbo, im talking 1+ million subs and less than 50k views, and others consistently gets tons of views for each upload. Others have mostly shit views for their amount of subs and the odd video that goes viral.

The content and thumbnails is similar... there's no real reason other than the algorithm is showing some stuff and other doesn't, based on god knows what.

Now my channel, I uploaded 2 months ago. Tell me how can you be consistent if you are making 10+ minute animations? it's just not possible. You either make total garbage content, resort to blackhat techniques like reuploading old videos in your new videos to get watchtime etc, or upload less often. The best performing channels are not uploading often, their upload schelude is around one a month, sometimes more. It's just that their videos get constantly recommended. There's some guys can upload weekly and do good somehow, and they are black-hatty like reuploading stuff changing the music, speeding it up or down (I mean their own content, just older videos). But this could backfire long term if YT decides to look at it, that is why im avoiding this, and im aiming to be like the 100% whitehat channels that upload once a month and do great. I had a good streak of good performing videos, then some others do like shit. It's also very fucking annoying that some people just want to see the same series of animation and will ignore anything that isn't that, so when it's shown to them it lowers the CTR. Some people just subscribe for a particular series, and if you dont upload only that, they get annoyed by your uploads and unsub, lower your CTR etc. Then again this series was in another language and had a shit CPM, im no longer doing that. I want that generic worldwide traffic that the best peforming videos are giving me.

My retention is good, that is clear. Once kids start watching they get hooked, most of my videos do well there. However, CTR is a crapshot. You have a small window of opportunity there, where your thumbnail is shown along with a bunch of other ones. It's too fucking random to predict where they will click. Most have similar titles that are supposed to rank well, good flashy thumbnails and so on. I believe there is a lot of luck involved there, more than people want to aknowledge, and there's also the very realistic scenario of youtube picking channels or videos by hand and boosting them. And everytime I do something im paranoid. A couple of months ago I was paranoid about COPPA, being too kid friendly. Then I added a more "spicy" video, still playful, but with cartoony pixelated blood, censored swearing and so on, still in the same vibe as the other videos, same series, this is the one that performed shit that I posted the metrics from (but has a great above average retention). So you start getting paranoid. Did the initial low CTR crash the video permanently? has YT now permanently flagged my channel as not as family friendly anymore and now im fucked with lower views for life for further uploads? You start thinking all those things because you have no idea what is really going on under the curtain. And since you are some anonymous dude, subs are pretty much irrelevant beyond a tiny initial push, most views come from recommended, as happens with most animation channels.

Im going to keep working on this video, hopefully by next friday im done, I usually upload on fridays as I see a peak of traffic in weekends, then we'll see what happens.

I've also considered promoting a video, basically buying ads for the keywords. I have never done this before, the growth has been organic. So I ask, has anyone tried this? does it work? I wonder if the guys that are getting massive views everytime are buying some ads to get the ball rolling. What is the ROI?

well done bro couldnt have said that better. the op needs to understand that. u need to do constant work.

also some people expect to get continouos traffic for life like passive which will never happen anymore. only with certain methods.

u need to work work, plus its randomized, but retention and CTR is still a king

Like I said before, it's physically impossible to constantly upload in the animation niche, and the best performing channels aren't flooding you with videos.

https://www.youtube.com/user/noogai89/videos

This guy is one of the best performing channels in the animation niche and uploads like once a month or less for instance. Meanwhile others channels may have the odd viral video, and the rest just are stuck, so you depend on this small set of viral videos that keep growth in your channel. Imagine spending a month meticulously working in animation to have it stuck at 30k views or some shit, and basically have it grow because you send traffic to the video from the other videos, but this is useless. You do it so it doesn't look bad having a video with so few videos with many subs... and you go and work into a new video, thinking if you are wasting your time again or not.

The content and thumbnails is similar... there's no real reason other than the algorithm is showing some stuff and other doesn't, based on god knows what.

some things what u said is also wrong. there are gameplay channels that upload some good edited gameplay every single day it's good content and they blow up with millions of views.

like i said not all their videos perform well

nowadays it's shit that when u have a lot of subs u get less views. even idk why that is. this wasn't they way yt was before. it seems like they don't notify subs properly.

also ik a channel with 1M subs they upload every dam day gameplay. despite 1M subs average video views 32k to 100k. when it blows up 5M views 10M views etc. all their videos don't blow up. even those non blowing up videos have insane watchtime and ctr. still

i think yt is dumb. they intentionally did all this so we can't make money easy.

i have to admit it. in the past when u had subs it was like snowball effect u kept getting more and more views and explode.

but now 1M subs = 20k to 100k views average expectation per video.
absolute garbage.

The people that upload gameplays daily with millions of views per video are a tiny minority of basically famous people. They have people actively looking at their channels all the time for new uploads because they dont even trust the notification system. They don't depend on the randomness of the recommendation section as much, they literally have hundred of thousands of people actively wanting to see the next video. They are celebrities. It doesn't apply to us. In fact they can get away by going on twitch, making a bunch of money, then making a half assed video cutting sections of the live twitch session and make money again on youtube. They are in a lucky position.

And again, im not doing gameplays, so it doesn't apply to me, I cant upload often. The idea of doing animations was precisely to make more interesting content than some gameplay and get higher retention, but even with high retention it's still a crapshot.

The video im working in im sure will have good retention and it's pretty long.. around 15 minutes of animation. Kids gonna like this one. However, im debating what title and thumbnail to put. Since only a few words show specially on mobile phones, you have to select the first words.. but you are also paranoid that if you leave the most important keyword ranking words (but not as catchy) for later it may not rank as good.. so you start considering all those things and become insane. You are basically gambling away a month worth of work in some stupid title and thumbnail. This is why I can't take this, every video has to perform at least decently, otherwise this is not sustainable.

actually u r right. yt is fukd up now. randomly promoting trash content. but those editors and film makers who put heavy work and top class content don't get promoted

Well my friend now i can understand you niche and i can say you need to make a cult or something else.. but you have to have a loyal subscribers to keep your ball running.. and also the channel you shared .. you should check with vidlq plugin to where the most engagement is coming from ... i can sense Reddit is the best source of that channel.. and also about consistency ... why i said you have to make more videos because you can go only so far with old content.. and even the 8m subscriber channel you shared is uploading every month but he found his game and he is rolling his views .. you have to find your mojo too.. and also there is no realistic scenario of youtube picking videos by hand.. its all algorithm .. nothing else.. and if you not going for loyal audience .. you are in hit or miss zone.. and also about paranoid shit.. you didn't even went for SEO part for website on google search.. that shit is more scary... look all in all .. we can all spend our times and tell you this or that or retention is shit or ctr is shit or blah blah blah blah... the only thing is important is every niche is different.. its audience is different .. and the way the videos get recommended is different.. so try try and learn learn and keep pushing every video to make loyal audience.. your channel animated niche really really needs loyal audience .. who love and share your videos everywhere.. that way you can be more popular and that way you will get more views.. but again don't take my or anyones word.. try and see for yourself.. and good luck .. i would hope you get paid for your hardwork :)

actually u r right. yt is fukd up now. randomly promoting trash content. but those editors and film makers who put heavy work and top class content don't get promoted
as a individual you can only concentrate on one thing.. either make trash content easily and concentrate on marketing and other stuff or concentrate on top class content making and in the mean time leave the other things like optimization and marketing... if you conquer both.. you got yourself a pewdiepie or vanossgaming or many other youtube channel ... even the one op mentioned above in his thread...
