He is essentially placing a bet on whether this becomes serious or not.
If it does become serious, he will sell masks to those who are willing to pay more (maybe because they need it more, who knows?) thus ensuring a more fair distribution. It ensures that masks are available at all times for the serious buyers, otherwise there would be no incentive for the manufacturers to increase production and likely, the cheaper masks would be bought by people who might not use them.

If it turns out to be serious he is rewarded with money and those who bought the more expensive masks are rewarded with ... well, the masks they were able to buy because of him. If this is not serious, the mask supply will be restored and he will have to sell his stock with a loss.

That's free market.

It's one thing if OP had products on-hand, or had relationships to people who had stock, and decided to make a business move. I don't see anything wrong with that. It's business. You're correct, if there's a shortage of masks right now, and people are already to buy it, you should get paid for your services.

It's another thing to be so thirsty for an opportunity to make a quick buck off sick (dying) people, that OP would hop on to BHW to ask because he's that desperate to cash in.

Speculator takes the risk that the situation might not be serious and the masks will not be in demand. If not for the speculator, the manufacturer would have to take this risk and there is chance that they wouldn't, so the rate of production would be increased too late.

2. By buying up masks right now, the speculator makes it so that those who want to get a mask have to spend more money. We can assume that those who need the masks more are willing to pay more, with individual exceptions of course. For example a person living in a dangerous area, will consider $20 an acceptable price for a mask, however a person who lives far from dangerous areas would consider spending $5 but $20 is just too much (maybe until the disease reaches his area).

You make it seem like OP is a genius, like it's a scene from "The Big Short" movie. There is no "speculation". OP is not a "speculator", he literally just posted this yesterday...this has been going on. There's a time-lapse video of China building a hospital in I believe under a week - it might've been shorter. Stores in China have been fined for hiking up prices, and I've seen other people try to take advantage and cash in on this, in poor taste. Any manufacture with half a brain knows it's time to ramp up on production, and they are. I think I even read a headline of an energy company starting production to keep up with demand.

My thing is, if you have the resources available to you and you want to make a logical business move, fine. I wouldn't do it, but I can't hate on that. But just the desperation of posting here because you're that desperate to profit off something like this is just low. OP claims he's getting it for corporations that want to donate (as if they couldn't pull strings on their own), but look at his post history and take a wild guess what his true intentions are.

You do realize that there is a global shortage of masks and people still want and need them, right? They are ready to pay more money because they see this as a serious threat but there is a lack of supply so the prices keep rising.

Why would it be "wrong" to sell masks for the market price?
The "wrong" thing to do would be to have masks but not to use or sell them. Now that's "wrong". Instead of using it to protect yourself or selling it to people who want/need it you are just sitting on unused masks.

Not everyone was quick enough to buy masks for himself, however there is still opportunity and it's there because of people selling them for higher prices. That's how market works.

That's because you think only with your brain, not your heart.

It is really in demand now.
In India, today one of my customers asked for 1lakh pieces of coronavirus mask. It is now demanded in India too.
I get it at price at 8rs Indian Rupee from someone and I have given the price of 10rs/piece. It was the price of double-ply.
I was in the middle of trade and hopefully, wish if it gets confirmed.

i just feel bad for the seller whose take advantage of this situation.
