Find a food pantry in your area that gives out free food.

Take all they are willing to give.

Deliver it to a family in need and explain to them the process so they can get help going forward.

My wife did that this AM and that family got at least 100.00 in free food; nice people who are a little down on their luck who have 3 children and one is a newborn.

Burma Shave.

I usually just carry a bag of toenail clippings with me so I can sprinkle on my food at restaurants, but to each his own I guess.

Now what's really needed is a law that supermarkets are not allowed to throw away food, but have to give it to those in need.
This cuts down on waste in the first place, and helps poor families. Simply human methinks.
AFAIK such a law only exists in France. But I hope to stand corrected.

In the U.S., up to 40percent of the food that is produced every year goes wasted. That translates into an economic loss of $218 billion per year,

When you have so much you work extra hard to go hungry.

Then there would need to be a law that you cannot sue for any issues related to free food, then the supermarkets in the US may throw away less....

Yeah, tort in the US is insane.

I volunteered at a non-profit that received, sorted, and distributed all the rejected canned food and candy (the can is dinged, label ripped off, expired, etc.) from the supermarket. We had to throw away all the food from Nestle - something about Nestle corporate policy. It broke my heart dumping out Crunch bars and stuff...

but that stuff is garbage "food" anyway, so it was for the better.

They also made all the middle school sorters empty their pockets whenever we got candy, which I thought was pretty funny. Everyone still ate stuff, though.

No one gives free food in my country.

Thats a nice thing to do tho, not gonna lie.

Warnings are never personal - helping out a family in need is though.

They also tried to do this in Romania, but it seems that that law remains in the books right now. It was an interesting project. I hope they will do it soon!

My wife used to work on the public sector as admin on a national UK company sponsored by the government, 3 days a week companies as Pret A Manger used to bring almost expired food (last 2 days) for their students, which was a real gift for them, just because most of them by nature was very poor. This system works, like Pret A Manger, would be forced anyway to throw the food as most of them are freshly made ... but sometimes governments don`t give a fuck about, for them are just extra money spent on delivery.

On the other side, when I was young ( I still believe I am ) as an immigrant with small pockets, I used to work in a luxury hotel from central London, you would be surprised how people throw 3/4 of 500-900 GBP champagne bottles like who cares ... we are millionaires anyway.

All you need is a strict system forced by the government telling all companies to not waste the food/drinks and related but to help poor kids, homeless and old people in exchange for % cut from their taxes.

Shit, I should be a politician, but first I need better English :D

I'll also say it's pretty damn hard to go hungry in the US. There is just so much free food if you know where to look.

I recently volunteered at a place giving out free food to people. We were literally giving out 10+ pounds of mangoes, all the okra you could take (one guy took 100+ pounds for his church), gallons of fresh orange juice, some other vegetables that I can't remember, and other really good food.

It was ridiculous. It was from some multinational donating extra food to a non-profit, I guess.

Anyway, we were begging people to take more food. Despite all the begging, we still had hundreds of gallons of OJ leftover... and I lost count of how many crates of mangoes and okra we couldn't give out.

I took home about 30 gallons of OJ, a bunch of mangoes, and a few boxes of okra. My parents were quite happy with that. We had mango smoothies for a few weeks. I think my mom still has some okra in the fridge.

if your wife lives in my area, I'm sure she will have many rivals. because looking for something free is entertainment for us.
Your wife does not need to take and give, just tell the neighbors and I make sure the place will be full of poor and rich people scrambling to get food.
Not because we are starving, but because we like to fight for something free.

If you are hungry, just come to the food stall if you need to eat and say if you don't have money, you will get food. However, you have to wash a few dishes after that.

Javanese style

She does not live near you and she is all about helping those in need and this is a nice way to do that + she can share with them how they can get that kind of help on their own in the process.

I agree. I think this law exists in Poland too as I remember reading about it a few months ago.

Why don't people who need it do it on their own?

I don't get the concept of "food bank"
