[Question] 880 old back links suddenly disappeared from google console

Hi everyone

Last month I bought a premium domain from an auction, right after I bought the domain, I added it into google webmaster tools

It showed me site traffic, and 893 backlinks. So until today, all those backlink count was there.

And when I checked the console today, it shows only 13 new backlinks which I started building last week.

what has happened to all those old 880 old backlinks?I checked from ahref, moz, those backlinks are still there.

Am i doing something wrong? Or is this another Google dance?

I have similar type of experience. One of my sites has 448 links but after google update it became 388. May be google changed the way it counts backlink.

Were those junk links? Maybe google new update is all about finding junk links and clearing them out

It happend to me also . Had few hundred and now only 4 links remained...... it happed around 1 month ago or more...and links still didnt appear back.

No. Those were high DA genuine non-spammy links. Check this list from moz. Those links are still there.

It seems redirect to me.

Old backlinks were mostly made in following format http://www.domain.com

I made new backlinks using this format https://domain.com

And now inside console, I have added both formats. Do you think this affects my SEO?

I was not talking about that kind of redirect. What I was saying, the domain that you have purchased has 301 redirect of a domain which has backlinks and after you made purchase it was removed. Check once for this issue.

Regarding your above question, I don't think it matters if your site is properly redirected from http to https, but different guys has different view on this. Let's see what other thinks

Yes. Every link is there

I found 1 more thing. I was using an A record for www subdomain instead of CNAME . So www was pointed to the same website IP. Maybe google counted it as another website in a subdomain

Now I changed www to a CNAME and pointed back to the main domain. Let's see if this makes any difference

There are no differences between an A and a CNAME. The CNAME is just to point to a domain (therefore it needs resolution within a DNS) and the A is just straight forward.
It's very weird this situation, have you lost a significant amount of traffic (more than a 50% drop) and SERPs rank after this?

I bought this domain 2 weeks ago. it was up for sale for a few months. So didn't have much traffic and not yet ranked for new website keywords.

Yeah its really weird. It only shows 12 newly built backlinks and 1 old backlink from ycombinator

You have changed the website and removed the pages where those backlinks were directed. So:

if the backlinks are taken from homepage then they are deindexed, Try to reindex it. If the backlinks from a post/pages then develop the pages and put the posts out there...

if the backlinks are taken from homepage then they are deindexed, Try to reindex it. If the backlinks from a post/pages then develop the pages and put the posts out there...

Nothing is deindexed, and all links disappeared are for home page

every page is well indexed in google

hmmm... that's weird then.

how about if you go to google and enter pages where you have backlinks? Will you see those pages indexed?
I have a similar story where GSC doesn't show all indexed links but the backlink pages are indexed if I check manually.

Yes. every single link is still there as of Ahref, moz, and basic google search, and the previous owner had an authoritative SAAS startup in this domain. Most of those old backlinks are natural. Nothing has been removed

Update - after 2 weeks ( Still 800 links are missing )

Now i see 53 baclinks and all these links are made during past 2-3 weeks after launching the new website. None of the old backlinks returned to the console

Looks like purchasing a premium domain with good old backlink profile will not going to make big difference anymore. I can still see old backlinks by doing a domain name search on google. but its weird google shows only new backlinks inside the console.

If you changed preferred version from www to non www this is perfectly normal behaviour.
