In about a month I am taking 2 weeks off my job to look for another job.
I am curious about seo jobs.
I had one seo job before but it was telemarketing stay there for a month.
I know people are going to say be my own boss, but due to my past of losing main source of income twice, that would be something I would be uncomfortable with. Plus not being around anyone all day
Questions
I have experience with my own sites. I can prove it with analytics. Does this count as experience?
Is there any telemarketing involve to get own clients or does the company provide it
What is the starting pay? It is around minimum wage? I know depends where you live at.
Can i put
I read blackhatworld,
follow all the gurus,
know how to use most seo software such as ahrefs, etc?
I live in the USA, specifically in the Midwest, and have had a career in SEO for nearly 6 years now. A year before I started working for a company I did freelance web design/SEO and put this down on my resume. I got started with an entry level SEO job (the job title was “SEO Support Specialist”) that had me doing a LOT of shitty grunt work that I hated (writing metadata, content, etc.) for about a year then I leveraged this experience to get a job as an SEO Specialist working directly with clients and continued to work my way up. Now I have a job with a corporation that has teams I can outsource most of the work to and I’m responsible for high level strategy and communicating with my clients. The work is fun and really fulfilling.
To answer your questions specifically:
1. It depends on the company, but I would think having credible experience and expertise in the field is what matters. Try tailoring your resume to what the job descriptions say for each company you apply to. You’ll have to be creative since you technically have been doing this on your own, I would frame it as you being a freelancer and talk about how you’re driven and a hard worker by doing it on your own. Shit like that.
2. I’ve worked for 2 different digital marketing companies and both have had a designated sales department that handled bringing in new customers. I think this is pretty normal so I doubt you’d have any expectations to bring in new clients yourself. I have had occasions where my managers wanted me to ask my clients for referrals, but that was due to us temporarily losing our sales team (long story) - that’s about it. I wouldn’t worry about needing to find clients you’ll likely have your own clients given to you to manage.
3. I started an entry level position in 2015 at around $35,000 (roughly $17.51/hr). Your pay will rise as you take on new positions obviously, and again every company is different in what they pay.
4. I would include that you know specific tools like Google Analytics, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, SEMrush, etc. Typically you’ll see the tools they are wanting you to know in the job description.
Like I said, you’ll likely have to get an entry level job to start out with and do “bitch work” but over time you’ll climb the ladder.
