Purchased a domain

without doing my due diligence and checking its history.

Now I see on whois.domaintools.com that it has had 4 changes on 4 unique name servers over 5 years.

Is it safe to start a website using such a domain or should I drop it and buy a new one?

I don't see any problem. If your domain is brandable and has worth in its name itself then FOR SURE you should build a website. You can even make a FRESH START and just forget about its past. Just make sure its past was not too bad (google ban, spam backlinks, etc).

Is it still indexed? If they sites had outlet/pharma/gambling/Chinese content then stay away. Also look for pbn traces. Lastly, check its anchors. If all is well, then add it to the webmasters tool.

Check content, backlinks and spam score of the domain. Make sure it doesn't have any penalty.

What everyone just said, but from what I encountered so far after 4 owners...it probably has had a hard life and you should go something else.

There is no point in buying such domain since it doesn't have any backlinks, this means it's not an authority domain nor does it has value in the eyes of search engines.
