What is the best wordpress permalink structure?

Quick update...launched a brand new site on Thursday morning and G has listed all 5 pages already.
I am trying the new /%category/%postname%/ permalink structure for the first time and combining it with Headspace instead of All in one SEO and I've also noticed that for the first time ever, G has listed 2 of my categories and they haven't even got any posts in them!
I am very, very impressed.

SO do you think it would be worthwhile to try headspace and get rid of all in one seo, or do you think it has to do with the new permalink only?

I think it's probably too early to say because I use All-in-one SEO on all my other sites and usually swear by it. As you say it could be just the new permalink structure so I will continue to monitor for another week or so.

There is a great video I saw here somewhere where a guy explains how to use Headspace effectively and I have implemented his ideas.

Here is my opinion. Using %Category%%Postname% gives you more space to embed your keywords in a theme based fashion. On the other hand, using %Category% will increase the length of the URL and therefore decreases the density of your main keywords. Also there may be a limit on the number of characters G may consider in their ranking.
Puting %Category% doesn't have any influence on depth of the url straucture because in both cases,the pages are in same depth from the root of the website.
If you would like to benefit the theme based structure and LSI, put %Category% in your permalink structure. IMHO, it give more authority feeling to the blogs rather than just using %Postname%.

My 2 cents.

I think it is best to keep the URLs as short as possible as as much keywords as possible.
For myself, I use %Postname% and I write my titles very carefully to avoid unrelated/unnecessary words in the permalink.
