It's not really fresh news, but i haven't found anything on BHW about this. I was browsing this site: https://killedbygoogle.com/, which is interesting on its own. It's a site about all of the products Google killed or planning to kill. It's almost 200 products, a lot of them were shut down a long time ago, a few of them recently, while others will be shut down in the near future. So i was reading that site and i was surprised to find Hangouts there. They already started the shutdown process in October for enterprise users (G Suite) and they will continue to do so for free users in 2020. They're planning to migrate free Hangouts users to the free version of Hangouts Chat, which is a paid service at the moment as a part of G Suite.

Nice! So, another google project failure (well, I wouldn't call it exactly failure, as they reuse almost every piece of code & data they have..). :p
Good that they decided to kill it though. I never even figured out what to do with that chat platform, and I guess I am not alone. They even tried loading those weird chat widgets in my gmail inbox.

Well, i'm actively using it still. I used its predecessor, Google Talk too, which was a simple chat application. I liked that one, Hangouts not really. But it has more than a billion installs on Android, so it will affect a lot of people.

Hopefully not Gmail will be the next one they're killing. :)

Ahh so that was the name!! Yupp I remember Google talk now. I used to use that software too. Also used yahoo chat (or whatever it was called back then) bcoz I totally loved playing pool. Hangout was a total alien thing for me. :D

Nah man, I don't think so. They are actively working on email spam detection algorithm and machine learning in general. If they make it paid only, they would lose billions worth free data. ;)

Very cool. I didnt know that they had so many products... thanks for the share
