Using an .edu service is it safe?

There are a lot of services on here which offer an .edu service.

We are looking into it and questions have been asked if it's safe to use. I believe it is, is there anything I should worry about with these kinds of services?
It looks like they are posting follow backlinks using profiles on the university websites.
