Marketing goes beyond just a problem/solution angle. If you do, you only know marketing on a surface level.

Just take a look at Pepsi vs Coke on Amazon prime which is a great documentary on marketing.

Both being big brands but do not solve any problem. We all know they are selling something with zero health benefits. Over the last 100 or so years, they have always created different messages for the public while tirelessly attempting to de-position each other. Now, this is something which will make you think for a moment.

The question is, would Coke have done better without Pepsi?

Would Batman have done better without the Joker?

So I have been thinking over this and found this:

In positioning science there are 4 motivating triggers or reasons people buy something.

1. Psychological need
2. Physiological need
3. Desire for something
4. Desire to avoid something

I think colas might fit into more than one of these. That doesn't align perfectly with "solve problem" but if you consider solving a problem is almost exactly the same as filling a need, colas do so.

Many tales to tell about these two competitors.

I've never been a fan of cola sodas tbh and never understood why people like them.

Just curious knowing how things work nowadays, why neither of them acquired the other ??? (salutes to Zuck).

In my country, there are two mini-markets which compete fiercely. They are Alfa Mart and Indomaret. Whenever there is Alfa Mart, there is Indomaret built nearby.

As a result, they become the biggest mini-markets that reach remote villages.

So, I'm pretty sure, without Pepsi, Coke won't be as big as now.

I like coke. Pepsi is meh. Maybe I hate pepsi that's why I like... Oh wait

Without Coke there is no Pepsi and vice versa.

They need each other to avoid being constantly penalized by the government for creating a monopoly.
