Expired domains are a dated strategy. Don’t “simply redirect it” as it does no good for your site and looks pretty suspicious in googles eyes.
However, let’s say you want to start a site in a given niche and avoid the sandbox alongside most of the lag with starting a site from scratch.
In this case, picking up an expired domain that is niche / business relevant is definitely one way you can go about it, building your site on-top if that has its benefits if you closely match what was there before.
Alternatively you can use it to build your own PBN.

Let me add redirecting expired domains straight to your website like OP plans to - dated strategy.
As for data, look on this forum that should be plenty.

I've did this - expired domains do not transfer their DA/PA to the target website using 301 - it will not increase the target website's DA/PA, and this is confirmed to be not working. Instead, heavily spamming a domain using automated tools (automated generated links, or AA links) will gradually increase the site's DA/PA over time.

I agree 100%, the moz metric is not used by Google in anyway.
However keep in mind that because so many people don't realise this people often want an increase in DA simply for selling links at a greater price.

Forget about DA, forget about metrics of all sorts. Focus on the quality, quantity and relevancy of the links powering a specific pre-owned domain you plan on using as a 301 to your money site.
It simply works.
Does it work all the time?
No.
But doing it right highly increases your chances of seeing a UNICORN like this one.
Also, there are multiple ways to do a 301.
Redirecting to homepage won't always work.
We recommend a 1:1 redirect at a page level should you find enough relevant pages to merge OR using the 301 acquisition method.

There are no metrics that will determine if a domain/link is a good domain or link, you need to research the backlink profiles and make a educated guess.
The more you do that the more you will understand that this metrics you people are depending on are utter garbage.
