Expiring domains are the best, because you have all tiers already done and it's done very well.
Where each poor link builder have at each higher level much more poor links - what is pretty simple to detect by Google.
And thereafter he is even surprised that Google penalized his site.

When I talk about using gsa, with links I have bought or clean links.

I'm saying give strength to good links by making a pyramid strategy.

example buy a link in a press, I want to make a tier 2 and tier 3.

what is the best pyramid strategy today for that press links,

Example only social tier 2, or just comments.

or on the other hand I bought an expired domain and had some authority and I want to improve it.

as I improve it, giving it more strength

TBH, I think the main real problem with that tool is that the number of postable sites, or sites that it can actually post on (it supports alot, but unable to successfully post to some). Over the years, these sites have decreased drastically, that forces nothing but scraps being available for the software to post. Nonetheless, if it is able to post to quality sites (that also actually approves your post/link), I'd go up to T3 with that software.

with gsa, this is how I do it. last time i did this was last year, so that should tell you something

• money site
• tier 1 (manual creation: PBN, web 2.0)
• url shortners (manual creation) [this is my tier 2]
• wiki/article (GSA) [this is my tier 3]
• forum, guest post, comment post (GSA) [This is my tier 4]

sometimes, I even go more extreme than above and do this

• money site
• tier 1 (manual creation: PBN, web 2.0)
• url shortners (manual creation) [this is my tier 2]
• another round of URL shortners (manual creation) [this is my tier 3] - Mostly bitly since it allows creation of bitly url shortners on top of other url shortners.
• wiki/article (GSA) [this is my tier 4]
• forum, guest post, comment post (GSA) [This is my tier 4]
