Google has strenghten their algorithm and these link schemes are not really a good thing if you plan on building a WH business on a long term.

I don't think it is the good long term strategy. Don't believe everything Google says, just keep it in your mind
If you would like to do link exchange, the right way is 3 way linke exchange (or even 4 way for that matter). If you don't have enough sites, build some.

You link to my site, I link to Joe site, Joe site link to Kris site, Kris links to you. -> of course if you both have multiple sites you can do it all by yourself.
4 way: You link from A to B, your link partner links from C to D

I think it was the authority hacker podcast which was talking about this a week ago. They can still work since they absolutely happen organically.

What if ABBA writes a review of Baba and Baba puts Abba review link on his site on his homepage and says read my business review here (inside here the link will be there to Abba site where Review has been written, will google penalise the sites? @bartosimpsonio can you answer my question.

Link exchange should work as long as you do it within limits and do not post the 'exchange link' on the site you just got a link for.
Example: Your site (A) gets a link from site (C). You can then give site (C) a link from your site (B) if you have multiple sites. Basically, it has to be a 3-way or more exchange.
