Everyone that uses IG knows that theres a blue button under each post (if you have a business profile) called "the promote button". Supposedly, when you promote an existing post on Instagram, the engagement that you garner via promotion adds to the engagement of the post itself. In other words, the free and paid enagement merge into one. Is this true? Or Instagram just makes a copy of the actual original post?

Everything lives on that one post. So engagement and stats all go to it. Unless I’m not understanding your question. When I promote a post IG uses that post, it does not make a copy.

Yes, unless you create an ad (as opposed to promoting an existing post). If you create an ad and it gets 100 likes, those likes wont be seen on your original post.

Ok thanks, so assuming this is true, the likes received via promotion will help my post to rank better on hashtags, explore...?

Yes, when you promote a post the engagement adds to the original one. It's just the same post being promoted, not a copy.

If I understood you well, you would like to promote a photo for a bit, so it would perform better organically through hashtags and location tags, right?
I would suggest you do that after a day of organic engagement (so, at least 24h after you posted a photo) so Instagram has some information who is the best audience for your creative. This way you will get a lot more engagement, for a smaller payment.

It depends on the type of stuff posted!

I'm actually not sure here.
I've done this many times and seen comments which were obviously from the Advertisement, and when I clicked it - it actually sent me to a copy of my post , with a completely different comment section (5 comments, I stead of my 500+ comments) , and they hid the likes numbers

Maybe this is just in my/our location (similar to how they hide likes in my country, but not the USA)

That's why I always went for "profile visits" to get them on my posts.

This was months ago, maybe it changed

There is a free way to get exposure as well. If you join a telegram group, you can use the dx30/dx10/dx5 strategies. Dx30 means you have to like 30 pictures that people have sent in the chat. When you are done liking, you can post a post saying dx30 + the link to your picture that you want to get engagement on. That means "I have liked 30 pictures, so now can 30 people like mine as well." This strategy was popular in 2017 but is still getting used today.

I'm not english, so just ask me to explain it better to you, if you want, and I'll try :)
