"Wikipedia changed the world" How so?

I watch to Linus Torvalds Ted Talk. He said "Wikipedia changed the world". That supprised me a lot. I thought Wikipedia is just one of ugliest website that give you untrusted information (everyone can edit it).

Well it ain't that easy to edit the important topics and important info. Either someone will notice that something is wrong and will edit/change it.

I trust wiki as content there is very well organized and thus it gives me easy way to find info that I am looking for. Even at the end you have references where you can click to read more about.

Maybe you think about wiki in this way, but there is the reason why it is heavily visited website all over the world.

No you cant just edit anything. Almost all changes are checked by trusted members and sources are required.

That's true in my opinion. Most of the information there is trusted and verified,when I want to learn something new my first choice is Wikipedia.

Their design is actually beautiful and unique,but maybe we have different tastes.

Everyone can edit it but the editors will verify it.

I'm a Wikipedia member with years of experience. If you analyze the internal component, Wikipedia is a very bad-smelling swamp.

Wikipedia is good, but I would never say it changed the world.

Like most 'big things' in our society Wikipedia became 'naturally controlled' by a very small portion of people. Stats are ridiculous, something like 120k users make edits and only 12k are active editors.

There's an interesting documentary on the most prolific editor, Justin Anthony Knapp, a guy with over 1.5M edits to his name. So it is mostly him 'controlling' what we learn from Wikipedia

It made it much easier to start doing research, a lot of the articles on Wikipedia will have references that you can check out to find out more information.
