Case 2 : If we are talking about keywords that are local and still have searches, yes it is possible to get a new website ranked in first pages with work that google doesn't consider as spam or something.
The Solution : Make backlinks the natural way, Local SCHEMA, Citations, Subdomain blog sites properly maintained with contact us page and map embedded. videos sites, doc submissions, PR posting of your business etc.

Yes i started a website for gaming news.. and I majorly focused on Fortnite news that was coming up and guides on fortnite

So i first started with writing guides that haven't been posted anywhere as i was a regular fortnite player so what ever came up in the game i just post about it in my website.
Then I started writing guides that had around 100-500 clicks a day (Single guide) i know this because i got ranked in those keywords.

What i did was :
1. Created profile on some good sites with high da where i can share the link of my newly published post.
2. Created forum accounts and started posting there(had a profile on epicgames.com official site of fortnite and got back link from there too)
3. Daily created a blog site link for my website or my portfolio as a writer.

this gave me enough juice in around 1 month that i started ranking on my other guides + the one with high Volume.

You're saying that the whatever came up in the game, you posted on your website, so I guess you were posting about new topics? Ones without competition at all (as they are new).

Did you read the whole reply above. I started with new things then i started posting old guides.

I started writing about fortnite 1 year after its' introduction. and my website was ranking along side forbes which is enough competition.

I am not saying its easy to rank the high volume keywords with new website. I am saying with enough related work through niche sites and some authority website mentions you can do it.

Every site I create has KW's in the top 100 within a week or two, it takes me a few months to get them to rank top 10, then a few more to get to position 1.

My understanding of sandbox is different, As when i started work around 8 years ago. I didn't know enough about these technical things, so made a whole lot of backlinks in 10 days and the website got into sand box

which means it wasn't showing in any keyword whether it is a low traffic volume keyword or .. high traffic volume keyword.

Getting into top 100 of a particular search is also getting ranked as google as deemed your website worthy to be included in the search of that keyword.

Few years ago, when SEO was much more simple, you could just launch a new website, send some links and add content and start ranking in the first month.

However, those days, the game is a bit different.

Step 1:
The first step every new legit business over the world is doing is to create a Social Fortress, which is basically creating pages on popular social signals platforms like FB, Twitter, Linkedin, G+, Instagram, etc.
I will also recommend setting up IFTTT, so every new post you will publish will be syndicated on those platforms and therefore will drive additional social signals to your pages.

Step 2:
Press Release is really popular among real new business, so it is something you want to do on your new websites as well. Just order PR package from some popular service.

Step 3:
Get some social signals.
I will suggest ordering social signals to your homepage, dripfeeded for few weeks.
In the meantime, publish your content and if you did setup IFTTT as I recommended earlier, you should have social signals going to your inner pages as well.


Do this, get some early love from Google and you will be able to reduce the sandbox length and start ranking ealier and faster!

You're talking about a long tail keyword, with 50-200 searches. I imagine the competition is ultra-low. So ofc it's possible in these specific cases.

Just some points:
1) If forbes are on the first page, it doesn't necessarily mean the competition is high. It could be that nobody is targeting it (Forbes as well) and they're ranking it just because their authority.
2) "Enough related work through niche sites and some authority website mentions" - Well, in your case, I think you probably ranked new keywords (New Fortnite topics) which were ultra easy with out too much work. And then, your website was indeed getting traffic from Google as you maybe were the only one targeting these new easy keywords and it definetly increased your trust and leaded to being able to rank higher competitions keywords.
Just my gut feeling, again, there could be so many factors here so can't really know without looking at the exact case.

Anyways, sounds like you're doing good job.
